Job Description

Position: Public Works Laborer (Street)

Job Summary:

The Street Laborer performs labor and a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in maintenance, construction, and repair work. This position is authorized to operate city vehicles and equipment and is considered a safety-sensitive position.

Specific Duties:

  • Operate pneumatic and hand tools; operate light equipment and trucks; clean and maintain equipment
  • Compile and mix materials to be used on the job assigned
  • Maintain records and log all work performed
  • Construct forms, lay cement, and finish cement on curb, gutter, sidewalk, street, alley, and other related areas; dig ditches; backfill trenches and holes; install storm drain pipes
  • Break and repair concrete and asphalt surfaces; excavate and replace concrete, and asphalt surfaces; perform hot patching and sealing on surfaces; shovel and rake asphalt
  • Setup and takedown traffic warning devices and barricades for traffic control
  • Trim weeds around roadways; pick up litter on medians, gutters, curbs, and related areas
  • Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner
  • Should have a knowledge of methods and techniques, equipment and tools of general construction, maintenance, and repair related to the area of work assigned; and occupational hazards and standard safety
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required

Essential Functions:

  • Ability to effectively communicate in oral and written communications
  • Ability to operate a variety of vehicular and stationary mechanical equipment in a safe and effective manner
  • Ability to perform a variety of manual tasks for extended periods of time in unfavorable weather conditions
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor
  • Ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and involve heavier objects and materials up to 100 pounds
  • Ability to perform work in extreme heat/cold weather conditions
  • Ability to function in an environment that may occasionally have strong odors, smoke, dust, or pollen
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Ability to maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include walking, standing, bending, or sitting for extended periods of time and operating assigned equipment and vehicles
  • Ability to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, communicating with others, and operating assigned equipment and vehicles

Required Education, Degrees, Certificates, and/or Licenses:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License
  • Two years of experience involving maintenance duties preferred
