City Of Davenport is Hiring a Building Inspector Near Davenport, IA

Under general supervision performs work of moderate difficulty inspecting buildings under construction and modification for code compliance; and performs related work as required.
Qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the written exam to be administered on May 29, 2024 at 4:00 PM CST. Those passing the written exam with a 70% or higher will be invited to participate in an interview scheduled on June 4, 2024. Both components will be graded and applicants must pass each component with a 70% or higher to be eligible to move forward in the process. 
Starting Pay | $29.20 per hour 6 months | $30.53 per hour (effective 7/1/24)
The City of Davenport offers a comprehensive benefit package. The cost for a family plan for medical, dental, vision and prescription is only $98.61 per month for 2024 and starts on first day of employment.

Makes field inspections of new, remodeled and repaired commercial, industrial and residential buildings: enforces code and ordinance provisions; checks survey stakes to see if excavation is in the proper place; inspects structural work for conformity with submitted plans; approves condition of buildings before they are moved; makes final inspections prior to use.
Investigates and resolves complaints; submits inspection reports for office records.
May perform various duties in the building inspection office: makes telephone contacts with contractor or owners; answers questions concerning building code requirements.
May substitute for trades inspector when necessary.Three years progressively responsible experience in the building construction trade at a journeyman level or as a building inspector; or an equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the required work in this position.
Certified by the International Code Council as a Building Inspector within six (6) months of appointment and maintain throughout duration of employment. 
Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain throughout duration of employment. 
Must pass a background check as prescribed by the City of Davenport.
Must reside in Iowa or Illinois within two (2) years of hire and maintain residency throughout the duration of employment. Considerable Knowledge of:
The materials, methods, and practices used in building construction and the stages of construction when possible defects and violations may be most easily observed and corrected.

Good Knowledge of:
The codes, regulations, and ordinances governing building construction.
Legal procedures as related to the enforcement of municipal codes and ordinances.

Considerable Skill in:
Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with contractors, property owners, municipal officials, and the general public.
The use of standard equipment and measuring devices in the building trade.
Reading and interpreting plans specifications and blueprints of ordinary complexity and to compare them with construction in process.
Recognizing faulty construction or hazardous conditions likely to result in collapse or failure of supporting walls, foundations, or structures and appraising for quality of condition and physical deterioration.
Explaining, interpreting, and enforcing codes, regulations, and ordinances firmly, tactfully, and impartially.

Working Skill in:
Posting simple reports and keeping records.
Identifying property boundaries from legal description.
Reading and comprehending construction codes and related materials.
Oral and written communication.
