Job Summary

The Volunteer Firefighter/Emergency Medical Responder performs activities required to protect life and property by engaging in firefighting, administering basic first aid, and providing other assistance as required.

The Volunteer responds to emergency fire calls, as well as accidents, man-made and natural disasters, bomb threats, public search and rescue, and emergency medical calls.

Minimum Education Requirements: Graduation from a high school or GED equivalent.
Experience Required: Most skills and abilities required to perform this job in an effective and efficient manner are acquired through training and job experience. Volunteer employees receive immediate supervision from superiors, usually with detailed instructions. Tasks requiring established regulations and procedures are reviewed for accuracy. Must obtain Firefighter 1 certification and a minimum of Emergency Medical Responder within the first two (2) years of service.
Direct Supervisor: Works under the close supervision of the Fire Captain, Deputy Fire/EMS Chief and the Fire Chief.
Supervisory Responsibility: None.
Primary Work Location: Fire Station. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts; in high, precarious places; is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, except during certain firefighting activities when the noise levels may be loud.
Employee may be exposed to Bloodborne Pathogens. Hepatitis B Vaccination is available.

Job Responsibilities

  • Performs firefighting and fire-prevention activities including climbing ladders, operating pumps and related equipment, laying hose, driving fire apparatus, and performing fire combat, containment, and extinguishment tasks.
  • Performs emergency medical assistance activities including administering basic first aid and providing other assistance as required.
  • Trains for, and participates in the protection of life and property by firefighting and rescue activities. Participates in fire drills and attends training classes in firefighting, first aid, emergency medical calls and related subjects.
  • Handles routine custodial maintenance of the fire department equipment (such as oxygen breathing equipment, resuscitation equipment, etc., apparatus and quarters. Cleans, washes and dries hose, tools and other apparatus. Participates in maintenance of trucks and equipment. Polishes and tests equipment. Cleans station and performs minor building maintenance.
  • Conforms to the safety requirements of the department.
  • Prepares call reports and keeps other records as required.
  • Attends meetings and training sessions as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge
  • Working knowledge of driver safety, laws, ordinances and department guidelines.

Abilities
  • Ability to learn the operation of fire suppression and other emergency equipment.
  • Ability to learn to apply standard firefighting, hazardous materials, and fire prevention techniques.
  • Ability to perform strenuous or peak physical effort during emergency, training, or station maintenance activities for prolonged periods of time under conditions of extreme heights intense heat, cold, or smoke.
  • Ability to tolerate extreme fluctuations in temperature while performing duties. Must perform physically demanding work in hot (up to 400°F), humid (up to 100%) atmospheres while wearing equipment that significantly impairs body-cooling mechanisms.
  • Ability to face life or death decisions during emergency conditions.
  • Ability to act effectively in emergency or stressful situations.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the general public.

  • Fire apparatus, fire pumps, hoses, and other standard fire-fighting equipment and emergency medical equipment

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move over 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.


Qualifications

  • Must be able to read and write the English language. Must be able to verbally communicate to exchange information.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must possess, or be able to obtain by the time of hire, a valid Oklahoma State Driver’s License with good driving record.
  • Must pass a criminal background investigation with no felony convictions or disqualifying criminal history.
  • Must be able to pass drug/alcohol screening.
  • Must obtain Firefighter 1 certification and a minimum of Emergency Medical Responder within the first two (2) years of service.
  • Must make at least 50% of all regular scheduled monthly training.
  • Must be active on calls.
  • Must not miss more than two (2) consecutive monthly volunteer meetings or miss three (3) meetings in a calendar year.
  • Must comply with all Rules and Standard Operating Procedures of the Coweta Fire Department and the City’s Personnel Manual.
