GENERAL PURPOSE: 1/2017

Operates various pieces of equipment for the purpose of assembling and maintain street signs and traffic control devices, maintains equipment and performs other duties as assigned.


SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

Receives direct supervision from Superintendent Street/Drainage.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Fabricates and assemble signage in accordance with the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, using computer and vinyl cutting machine.

Used propane and other heating device to install heat tape and prefabricated markings, paints and maintains striping on streets and selected parking areas.

Fabricates and applies fleet vehicle numbers and identification.

Fabricates banner signs for various City departments.

Assists with traffic control for temporary work zones, places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades, flagging operations for traffic.

Install or replace completed sign assemblies, as necessary.

Repairs damaged or faded traffic control devices and pavement markings.

Maintains accurate records of all signage activity.

Uses weed eaters and chain saws to trim overgrown vegetation, as required.

Perceive the full range of the color spectrum, such as working with color-coded electronic components or multi conductor cables. Use graphic instructions, such as schematic diagrams and blueprints.

Mixes concrete and performs repair work.

May be required to assist in street repairs, operate equipment and dump trucks.

Troubleshoots in the field and restores operation to traffic signal control devices that have undergone electrical, electronic equipment or electrical wire/cable failure due to vehicular accidents, vandalism, adverse weather, or construction crews.

Tests traffic signal control equipment and related devices to identify defects in electric, electronic, and electro-mechanical equipment.

Identify component parts of electronic and electro-mechanical devices used in traffic control work.

Programs various types of computerized traffic signal controllers and school zone flashing lights.

Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service

The employee must have the ability to work well with others and have a good/pleasant attitude.

Performs other essential duties as required to achieve successful operations of the department.

Must be able to follow directions.

On call schedule required.

Regular and timely attendance is an essential job function.


PERIPHERAL DUTIES:

Serves as a member of various employee committees as assigned.

Other Duties as assigned.


DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from high school or equivalent;

One (1) year of truck driving equipment operation and vehicle maintenance; or,

Any equivalent combination of education and experience;

Must possess a valid Texas Drivers driver's License by date of hire with insurable record. CDL Class B certification required within nine (9) months of date of employment.


KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge in the safe and efficient operation of equipment and vehicles;

Knowledge of routine vehicle operation and equipment preventive maintenance;

Skilled in the use of computers and related software;

Ability to perform routine vehicle maintenance;

Ability to read and understand written/oral instructions;

Ability to interpret work using electronic schematics, wiring diagrams, and underground street intersection prints.

Skilled in the operation of light/heavy motorized equipment;

Ability to follow oral, written instructions and to relate well with the public and coworkers;

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists;

Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form;

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals;

Ability to write routine reports and correspondence;

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume;

Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry;

Ability to handle several duties at once and prioritize jobs.


SELECTION GUIDELINES:

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:

Computers, trucks, shredder, hand tools, power tools, landscaping equipment and jack hammer. Standard tools, materials, methods, and practices of electrical and electronic repair.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, ability to adjust focus, hand and foot coordination in the manipulation of landscaping/power equipment and motorized equipment and vehicles.


WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will primarily work outdoors. The employee usually works near moving mechanical parts, outside weather conditions, vibrations and other hazards associated within an outside work environment. Additionally the employee occasionally works in wet or humid conditions, in high and precarious places, with fumes or airborne particles, toxic and caustic chemicals, and there is the risk of electrical shock.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
