City Of Cooper City is Hiring a Camp Counselor Near Cooper, FL

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Under the general supervision of the Recreation Program Specialist, the position is responsible for leading, teaching, and conducting recreational and educational activities with children (campers) in grades Kindergarten through 8th. Responsible for creating and maintaining a safe and clean environment for camp participants.


SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Organize, teach, and lead recreational, educational, and age-appropriate activities with campers; engage children and student volunteers to promote group-wide participation in activities.
  • Responsible to supervise and maintain safety for a group of children (campers) through recreational activities during a scheduled camp program.
  • Manage minor disciplinary issues with age-appropriate responses; report all major disciplinary issues to Camp Site Supervisor; seek guidance from Camp Site Supervisor as needed.
  • Responsible for the supervision of assigned student volunteers.
  • Participate and assist with camp-wide special events and activities, including organization, operation, and clean-up.
  • Inspect activity area and game equipment upon arrival and on departure of each location to ensure area is safe/clean/orderly and equipment is in proper working condition; report hazardous situations and other issues to Camp Site Supervisor.
  • Apply general first-aid techniques in caring for injured campers; report all incidences of injury to Camp Site Supervisor regardless of severity.
  • Accountable to Recreation Program Specialist/Camp Director and assigned Camp Site Supervisor.
  • Maintain accurate and complete daily attendance records of assigned campers.
  • Perform related duties as directed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

  • Ability to work and communicate with camp participants, student volunteers, and Recreation staff.
  • Ability to inspire enthusiasm in participants.
  • Ability to manage a youth group of up to 25 campers.
  • American Red Cross First Aid and Adult/Child CPR- AED certification preferred.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general equivalency, supplemented by 2 years of progressively responsible experience and/or volunteer work with children in a camp or childcare setting or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Must be minimum 18 years of age as of date of hire. Prospective employee must be fingerprinted at candidate's own expense or have current fingerprints on record prior to employment. American Red Cross First Aid and Adult/Child CPR-AED certification preferred.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to work indoors and outdoors in a variety of weather and temperature conditions. Tasks may involve the ability to exert moderate to heavy physical effort which may involve lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (10-40 pounds). Tasks require the ability to lead groups and participate in activities which may involve bending, stooping, and standing.
