Job Description Summary

The purpose of this job is to promote public health by conducting inspections to monitor and enforce state and local ordinances for various establishments and facilities;

provides education of environmental public health laws and ordinances. Essential Duties and Responsibilities - The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job.

Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description

Conducts field inspections and responds to complaints involving food establishments, onsite wastewater system construction, swimming pools, licensed childcare facilities, and / or lodging facilities.

Ascertains and monitors compliance with state and local regulations, assesses and interprets risk to public health, and provides consultation and recommendations for interventions and best practices.

  • Issues written violation reports and notifications of hearings; prepares information packets for abatements; prepares and obtains written search warrants via the Boone County Prosecutor’s office.
  • Responds to environmental and public health emergencies.
  • Provides administrative public health support.
  • Teaches training class and provides one-on-one teaching scenarios during inspections and interactions with the public.

Delivers presentations to community organizations and stakeholders.

  • Participates in epidemiological investigations.
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

No supervisory authority. Work may require providing guidance and training to others.

Education and Experience - An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Environmental Science, Biology or related field with a minimum of 30 credit hours in science-related courses.

Licenses or Certifications

  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Certified Pesticide Applicator within 6 months of hire.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities which may be representative, but not all-inclusive of those commonly associated with this position Knowledge of :

  • Relevant laws and regulations pertaining to state and local public health codes and ordinances.
  • Principles of epidemiology, microbiology, and general laboratory practices relating to the standard testing and analysis of food products and environmental hazards.
  • Common business software applications such as Microsoft Office.
  • Basic business English usage, including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.

Skill in :

  • Communicating verbally and in writing to meet the needs of the audience.
  • Applying active listening and asking questions for understanding.
  • Compile, organize, interpret, and communicate data and results concisely.

Ability to :

  • Handle difficult and stressful situations with professional composure and maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
