City of Cocoa is Hiring a Maintenance Worker II - WFO Near Cocoa, FL

JOB SUMMARY
This is semi-skilled manual work involving the restoration of damaged property subsequent to water utility repair activities. This includes the repair of concrete and/or asphalt roadways, sidewalks, driveways, curbs, gutters, irrigation lines, and landscaping (i.e. sod, small trees, etc.). Employees in this class are expected to work without close supervision although work is subject to inspection during progress and upon completion. The Maintenance Worker II reports to the Crewleader and/or Supervisor II, and will lead a Maintenance Worker I in daily job assignments.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Must be proficient in brick, masonry and cement work construction; repairs sidewalks, curbs, and gutters and performs other general cement and brickwork. Must be able to prepare land for laying sod and related landscaping restoration activities. Performs a variety of semi-skilled carpentry and other manual work incidental to construction and maintenance activities.
  • Must be able to effectively lead a Maintenance Worker I in related construction and maintenance activities.
  • Performs specialized mechanical procedures and keeps written records of materials used.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate with the general public regarding the scheduling and completion of restoration assignments.
  • Must be able to safely load materials associated with restoration work such as rock, dirt, etc.
  • Operates power mowers, trucks, air compressors, power saws and pneumatic equipment efficiently and safely.
  • The majority of position duties are required to be performed on-site.
  • Assists in laying pipe and operating pipe handling equipment, and may be required to work on water and/or sewer infrastructure as required.
  • May be required to work in a standby rotation or during a declared/undeclared emergency.
  • Performs related work as required, including duties of a lower classification.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
 
  • Extensive knowledge of the methods, tools, pieces of equipment and materials used in general concrete construction, utility construction and building structures.
  • Ability to operate trucks, concrete saws, chain saws, backhoes, and other pieces of equipment of the trade.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral or written instructions.
  • Ability to be able to perform heavy manual labor under adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to be accident free.
QUALIFICATIONS
 
Education and Experience:
Graduation from an accredited high school or trade school. Minimum of two years of experience related to concrete construction and restoration activities. 
 
Special Qualifications:
Must possess a current State of Florida Class "B" CDL driver's license or must obtain a Class "B" CDL driver's license temporary permit by the Florida Department of Highway Safety & Motor Vehicles within 45 days of employment and successful licensure within 120 days of obtaining temporary permit. Required to be certified in CPR and First Aid, basic Maintenance of Traffic (MOT), work zone safety, confined space, and trenching/shoring (will be provided by the Utilities Department).
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
 
The work is generally heavy and may require exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and up to 50 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:
  • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing or crouching on narrow, or slippery surfaces.
  • Climbing: Frequently ascends or descends ladders, stairs, scaffolding, or ramps.
  • Crawling: Ability to frequently move on hands and knees or hands and feet.
  • Crouching: Ability to frequently bend the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
  • Feeling: Ability to perceive attributes of objects by touch.
  • Dexterity: Primarily with fingers, as in picking, pinching, or typing.
  • Grasping: Applying pressure with the whole hand.
  • Handling: Picking, holding, or otherwise working with the whole hand.
  • Hearing: Ability to hear and understand at normal speaking levels with or without correction.
  • Kneeling: Ability to frequently bend legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
  • Lifting: Ability to lift and move objects
  • Mental Acuity: Ability to make rational decisions.
  • Pulling / Pushing: Ability to occasionally move objects up to 100 pounds.
  • Reaching: Ability to frequently extend hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Repetitive Motion: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Speaking / Talking: Ability to communicate clearly, accurately and concisely through speech.
  • Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time.
  • Stooping: Ability to frequently bend body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.
  • Visual Acuity: Ability to perform activities such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; and/or extensive reading, operating motor vehicles; including color, depth perception, and field vision.
  • Walking: Ability to walk long distances to perform tasks and to move from one job site to another.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in a dynamic environment that requires the ability to be sensitive to change and responsive to changing goals, priorities, and needs. Work may be performed in both in and out-of-door environments with exposure to the wind, rain, cold, heat and cramped spaces.
