City of Cocoa, FL is Hiring a Valve Near Cocoa, FL

Under the direction of a Supervisor II or Assistant Manager, performs skilled work operating a hydraulic valve operator, documenting valve operation, condition, and operating GPS equipment.

The employee locates leaks in water mains and, on either an emergency or a scheduled basis, operates valves to control the flow of water through the water lines.

Employee interacts with customers by troubleshooting and / or investigating taste and odor complaints and complaints concerning low pressure and other similar conditions, while maintaining a high level of customer service.

Employee chlorinates and flushes new main and keeps accurate manual and computerized records. Employee performs general underground utility related work requiring the use of hand tools, power tools and construction equipment with frequent use of light to heavy automotive equipment and the upkeep and efficient operation of the tools and / or equipment assigned to the department.

Employee may perform janitorial duties, landscaping restorations, some building maintenance and general underground utility related work.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Locates, operates, and maintains pressurized water / wastewater valves.
  • Operates light to medium duty trucks and locating equipment.
  • Maintains records of work (drawing and measurements) for updating record maps.
  • Documents date and time of work; prepares reports.
  • Assists Maintenance Worker III, Supervisor II, and other maintenance personnel with utility preventive and construction maintenance projects.
  • The majority of position duties are required to be performed on-site.
  • Installs, repairs, and inspects water / sewer mains, valves, service lines, meters, fire hydrants, and related water / wastewater collections infrastructure when not actively operating valves.
  • May be required to work a standby rotation or during a declared / undeclared emergency.
  • Performs other related job duties as assigned.
  • Learn the system of transmission and distribution water lines and valves and the methods and procedures required to close water valves on a routine and an emergency basis.
  • Read maps (print and GIS) and street guides so as to navigate around the City of Cocoa service area. The use of the common types of mechanical tools used in valve operation and minor maintenance;

this includes pipe wrenches, screw drivers, adjustable open-end wrenches, and other related basic tools.

  • Basic arithmetic, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division sufficient to read water meters, compute water volumes and pressures, and to compute distances.
  • Take measurements with a measuring tape 50 feet or 100 feet in length.
  • The appropriate ways to deal with the public sufficient to present a positive image of the Utilities Department and to successfully communicate with customers from all socio-economic levels.
  • Follow safety policies and procedures and applicable agency requirements.
  • Read water meters.
  • Operate a personal computer and calculator in the performance of assigned duties.
  • Drive a small truck, car, or van.
  • Speak clearly and concisely in order to communicate effectively in person, mobile phone, and over a two-way radio.
  • Follow oral and / or written instructions sufficient to perform assigned work duties.
  • Read and understand procedural and training manuals, memos, departmental directives, and street guides of the City of Cocoa and surrounding area.
  • Write legible, concise, and accurate reports of work performed during assigned work shift.
  • Handle difficult customers and / or situations in a calm manner.
  • Skill in various utility maintenance and construction tasks.
  • High school diploma or GED certificate with one (2) years of previous experience working in utility maintenance or related construction;

or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. One (1) year of experience can be replaced by completion of a vocational trade program in any of these areas.

Examples of related areas include, but are not limited to, surveying, excavation, road repair, carpentry, heavy equipment operator, building maintenance, fire hydrant maintenance and repair and pipe fitting.

Special Qualifications

For positions requiring the operation of City vehicles, must possess a valid current Florida driver's license, or be able to acquire one within 45 days of hire.

WFO (4025) : Water Distribution Level III certification preferred.

The work is generally very heavy and may require exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally and up to 50 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

Additionally, the following physical abilities are required :

  • Mental Acuity : Ability to make rational decisions.
  • Pulling / Pushing : Ability to occasionally move objects up to 100 pounds.
  • Reaching : Ability to frequently extend hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Repetitive Motion : Substantial movements (motions) of the wrist, hands, and / or fingers.
  • Speaking / Talking : Ability to communicate clearly, accurately and concisely through speech.
  • Standing : Particularly for sustained periods of time.
  • Stooping : Ability to frequently bend body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.
  • Visual Acuity : Ability to perform activities such as : preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal;

and / or extensive reading, operating motor vehicles; including color, depth perception, and field vision.

Walking : Ability to walk long distances to perform tasks and to move from one job site to another.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in a dynamic environment that requires the ability to be sensitive to change and responsive to changing goals, priorities, and needs.

Work may be performed in both in and out-of-door environments with exposure to the wind, rain, cold, heat and cramped spaces.
