POSITION SUMMARY:
This position is primarily responsible for identifying, handling, and restraining animals and assisting with monitoring and maintaining compliance with city ordinances and state and federal laws regarding the treatment and care of animals.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Enforce state and city ordinances dealing with animal care, treatment, licensing, and impounding.
· Retrieve sick, injured, stray, vicious, or unwanted animals.
· Conduct humane inquiries and inspections and issue citations for cruelty and neglect.
· Determine and execute deadly or non-lethal force in controlling or stopping violent animal behavior. To terminate a suffering animal, contact the Director immediately.
· Provide accurate records and reports for evidence, including credible testimony about animal treatment.
· Assist in kennel duties, including the transport of animals for euthanasia.
· Cleaning and care of animals as assigned by the director.
· Monitor the health of the animals and advise of potential problems; administer medication to animals under a director’s supervision when required.
· Educate the public about animal welfare and control regulations.
· Required to respond to emergency call-outs and capability of working during all weather conditions.
· Administer basic first aid in emergencies.
· Participate in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and City government goals.
· Provide leadership to others through example and sharing of knowledge/skill.
· Perform other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION:
High School diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months of related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of both.
EXPERIENCE:
· Possess or can obtain a Basic First Aid Certification.
· Must possess a valid Mississippi driver's license with five (5) years of driver's record, shall reflect no charges that would adversely affect insurability under the city carrier's policy.
· Excellent written and oral communication skills.
· Ability to maintain accurate and complete records.
· Working knowledge of utilizing protective clothing, equipment, and other department-issued or approved items to perform the job.
· Ability to recognize the presence of potential health and/or safety risks in domestic animals.
· Ability to remain calm and tactful in stressful situations.
TECHNICAL SKILLS:
· Proficiency in utilizing computer software, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.
· Proficiency at operating standard office equipment, such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
· Controlling operations of equipment or systems, such as an automobile.
· Proficiency in operating, maintaining, sterilizing, and disposing of veterinary instruments or equipment.
· Familiarity with using capture sticks and other devices.
· Familiarity with operating radio communication systems and software specific to police operations.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:
An employee must meet the physical demands described here to perform the essential functions of this job successfully. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to sit and lift/move objects in excess of 100 pounds. The employee will be frequently required to stand, walk, sit, reach with hand and arms, climb and balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, taste, smell, and lift/move objects up to 25 pounds. The employee is regularly required to speak, listen, see, and use hands to finger, handle and feel. The use of a corrective lens to aid the employee is acceptable.
This position requires you to work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions and be exposed to biological hazards.
