JOB TITLE: Gift Shop Staff

CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt – Part Time

DEPARTMENT: Botanic Gardens

SUPERVISOR: Visitor Services and Education Coordinator

SALARY: $15.45 Per Hour

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION

Responsible for staffing the Tilted Tulip Gift Shop, primarily on weekends (Saturdays throughout the year and Sundays from June 1 through August 31). The position also includes a limited number of hours during the week staffing the Tilted Tulip Gift Shop, assisting with preparation and execution of events, and completion of tasks in greenhouse, conservatory, and garden spaces.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee a guest experience that welcomes diverse audiences, ensures high standards of customer service, generates repeat visitation, and inspires engagement in the organization.
  • Assist customers with merchandise and execute sales accurately and with courtesy.
  • Ensure that stock is labelled with bar codes and that depleted stock is replaced in a timely manner to maintain shop aesthetics.
  • Count the cash drawer at the conclusion of each business day.
  • Assist with events, educational programs, and garden maintenance as needed.
  • Alert the Visitor Services and Education Coordinator of any issues or problems in the operation of the Gift Shop; collect customer feedback regarding merchandise and report to the Visitor Services and Education Programs Coordinator.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of excellent customer service, when working with customers and the public
  • Knowledge of English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation
  • Knowledge of modern office procedures, software, methods, and computer equipment.
  • Skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including customers, the public, volunteers, and other staff members.
  • Ability in effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for: making observations, communicating with others, reading, and writing.
  • Skills to perform routine mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to respond to requests and inquiries from the public.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Skills to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently and to exercise reasonable judgment in decision making.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE JOB

Required:

High school diploma and some retail experience.

Preferred:

High school diploma and two or more years of customer service experience in a small shop environment.

Possession of, or ability to obtain an appropriate, valid driver's license.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Essential and marginal duties require a high level of stamina and good physical condition. Daily duties may include moderate lifting (up to 45 lbs.), carrying, walking to inspect all landscapes and gardens on a regular basis, repeated bending, being on your feet for most of the day, working with garden tools, working outside during adverse conditions, operating mechanical equipment, operation of computers, the ability to distinguish colors and the ability to safely drive city vehicles.

Working Environment:

Indoor, outdoor and greenhouse environment; confined working spaces; humid air. Exposure to radiant energy and inclement weather. Exposure to fertilizers, agricultural chemicals, and pest control agents. Work independently, irregular work hours including evenings and weekends as needed.
