City of Charlottesville is Hiring a Motor Equipment Operator II - Public Service Near Charlottesville, VA

The preferred hiring range for this position is between $17.69 - $23.80 an hour ($36,795.20 - $49,504.00 Annually). Starting offer is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity. This Motor Equipment Operator II is part of a refuse and street sweeping crew in the Public Service Division of the Public Works Department. Primary responsibilities are the operation, daily maintenance and general repair of the street sweeper used to clean roadways; during non-sweeping periods, will perform other right-of-way operations to include repairs, maintenance, leaf collection, and snow removal. Does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of a Maintenance Crew Supervisor.
 
Work hours will include early mornings to sweep busy roads and streets during low traffic periods; The anticipated work schedule is Monday through Friday, approximately 3:00 am to noon.
  • Operates a front-end loader;
  • Operates a back-hoe, trencher and related equipment in the maintenance and construction of roads and sewer lines;
  • Operates a heavy roller;
  • Operates large tractors with hydraulic arm mowers;
  • Operates bucket truck, chipper and large mowing equipment in the maintenance of grounds;
  • Operates televising and sewer cleaning equipment;
  • Operates multi-purpose equipment in laying storm drains;
  • Operates heavy sweepers in cleaning roads and streets;
  • Services and makes minor repairs to equipment;
  • When not operating medium to heavy equipment, operates light equipment;
  • Periodically performs semi-skilled manual tasks in connection with the equipment operated;
  • As a trainee, operates heavy equipment;
  • Performs related tasks as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma or GED. (If no diploma or GED is obtained, must have a minimum of 2 years of direct work experience in the field).
  • Must have experience in the operation of motorized equipment.
  • Must have a valid VA Driver's License by employment start date.
  • Must have the ability to obtain a Class A CDL within 6 months of hire. 
Skills: General knowledge of the principles and practices of operating and servicing trucks and related medium construction equipment; general knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; general knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to the proper operation of varied construction and maintenance equipment; skill in the use of the equipment to which assigned; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; mechanical aptitude; ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment; dependability.

Positions in the Public Utilities or Public Works Departments are subject to mandatory emergency and stand by call and with minimum response time requirements. 

Position is subject to federal DOT drug and alcohol testing regulations.
