City of Charlottesville is Hiring an Inclusion Camp Counselor II Near Charlottesville, VA

Charlottesville Parks & Recreation is committed to enhance the quality of life for all members of the Charlottesville community through the responsible stewardship of public land and parks to provide unforgettable recreational experiences. The City of Charlottesville is seeking candidates for the position of Inclusion Camp Counselor II who are highly motivated and who strive for success by demonstrating Charlottesville's Core Values of Leadership, Trust, Creativity, Respect, and Excellence. Our camps are designed to provide all children a fun, safe, and inspiring environment where they learn, grow, and play! Campers will participate in active play through sports, cooperative games, outdoor activities, arts and crafts, enrichment programs, pool days, and field trips.

The hiring amount for this position is $19.00 an hour.This is a non-exempt, temporary (variable/limited-hour) position, and is not eligible for city benefits.

  • Position requires 40 hours weekly, starting June 10th through July 26th with an optional week of work July 29th – August 9th, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. (No camp June 19 and July 4th).
  • Parks & Recreation is offering incentive bonuses for Summer 2024 which includes:
    • $250 Signing Bonus
    • $250 End of Season Bonus (Required to work 180 hours or more of work between June 10th – July 26th). 
Camp Counselors in our Inclusion program provide equal opportunities for children with or without disabilities, types of disabilities may include individuals on the autism spectrum and intellectual disabilities, to attend an inclusive camp program that provides a safe, fun, and nurturing environment for all participants. This position works with campers with disabilities to provide supports, modifications, behavioral and visual tools to support their success in general camps. This position performs a variety of duties related to assisting all leaders in camp program activities, supervision, and operations, which may be comprised of a children, youth, and/or young adults with or without disabilities. Primarily and most frequently, work is performed under direct supervisor within one functional area and of a routine nature. Reports to the Assistant Camp Director or Camp Director.Note: This job opportunity is advertised with a closing date of "Continuous."   • Supervises campers to ensure adherence to camp standards and established safety policies, procedures, guidelines, and operating requirements.
  • Assists camp leaders with the daily on-site operation of a recreational camp program.
  • Provides input to camp leaders for the planning, designing, and implementing of daily day camp activities and field trips that are age and ability appropriate.
  • Teaches, demonstrates, supervises, and officiates activities such as sports, games, arts and crafts, environmental education, water activities and field trips. 
  • Depending on assignment, assists with communicating camper numbers and meals for the breakfast and lunch USDA Summer Food Service Program form. 
  • Provide mentoring and coaching to Camp Counselor I’s, when applicable. 
  • Sets up and breaks down tables, furniture, rooms/areas of activity, and recreation equipment.
  • Assists camp leaders in the management and care of facilities and equipment in all program areas.
  • Assists camp leaders with daily and weekly rooms/areas of activity cleaning.
  • Follows all health and safety regulations when working with equipment. 
  • Encourages participation in camp activities and assist campers as needed.
  • Creates an environment which is inclusive for all campers. 
  • Acts as a positive role model to campers.
  • Maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals.
  • Communicates effectively, professionally, courteously, and thoroughly to campers, customers, co-workers, and supervisors.
  • May be required to operate a City vehicle, adhering to the rules of the City’s vehicle use policy. 
  • Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of six (6) months of experience working in a recreational setting with children, youth, and/or young adults with or without disabilities including but not limited to assisting, planning, supervising, and implementing recreational activities. 

OR

  • A minimum of six (6) months of work/volunteer experience, in any capacity, working with children, youth, and/or young adults with or without disabilities.

Special Requirements: 

  • Minimum Age: 18 
  • Preference for possession of CPR/AED/First Aid certification. 
  • May be required to operate a City vehicle, adhering to the rules of the City’s vehicle use policy. (May require possession of a valid, appropriate driver's permit)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to work with children and youth with or without disabilities and one’s peers; strong group leadership skills, high energy level, adaptability and dependability; able to communicate, supervise and provide sound judgment to participants and staff; able to react quickly, calmly and appropriately in an emergency situation; ability to perform first aid; able to enter, stand and move in a pool or lake.

Physical requirements of this position as outlined by the Department of Labor: MEDIUM: work involves exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, or an amount greater than negligible and up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work. 

This is a safety sensitive position subject to drug and alcohol testing for pre-employment, reasonable suspicion, post-accident and random testing. Dependent upon assignment, a majority of time spent in this position involves outside work which may involve extreme temperatures, extreme brightness and/or blood-borne pathogens. Position may require driving a City-owned vehicle and is subject to the vehicle use policy and procedures. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
