The Parks and Recreation Custodial/Mall Seasonal Maintenance Worker performs general custodial and maintenance duties related to the care, maintenance and cleaning of interior/exterior facilities, parks, downtown mall, UVA corner, right-of-ways and other City properties. The work involves the use of common tools and operating equipment in connection with the semi-skilled tasks to which assigned (this may include but not limited to power washers, hand operated tools, etc.); and maintaining appropriate records. Does related work as required. Primarily and most frequently the work done here is under general supervision, with related functional areas and more advanced applications.
Provides customer service and city beautification through efficient maintenance of the parks, recreational facilities, grounds, streets, schools, mall, and UVA corner. Provides service assistance in many functional areas within the Park system, which may include any one or more of the following tasks: mowing and turf maintenance, horticulture maintenance (such as maintenance of city-owned trees, including planting, pruning, felling, mulching, watering trees, flower beds and pots), construction, etc.
- Responsible for facilities, grounds and City infrastructure maintenance functions;
- Assists with construction and maintenance projects;
- Performs simple repair and completes maintenance assignments;
- May be exposed to or required to use chemicals in general maintenance responsibilities;
- Assists senior workers in semiskilled work and the use of hand tools and maintenance equipment;
- Operates hand tools and power equipment associated with custodial, construction and maintenance operations;
- Maintains appropriate records and/or data as required;
- May operate vehicles as required;
- Must have the willingness and flexibility to work as a member of one or several teams;
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Any combination of education and experience equivalent to high school or vocational school diploma or GED. (If no diploma or GED is obtained, must have a minimum of 2 years of direct work experience in the field.)
- Some experience as a laborer in the maintenance, repair and/or construction activities to which assigned.
- Some experience in the operation of mechanical and automotive equipment.
- May require valid VA driver's license by employment start date.
- May require the ability to obtain Pesticide Applicator certification.
- May require the ability to obtain a CDL within 6 months of hire.
This position may be required to work weekends, nights, holidays and/or emergency on-call.
This is a safety sensitive position subject to drug and alcohol testing for pre-employment, reasonable suspicion, post-accident and random testing.
The majority of time spent in this position involves outside work which may involve extreme temperatures, extreme brightness, chemicals/hazardous waste, blood-borne pathogens, infectious bacteria, fuels and allergens. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
This position also requires the regular use of or subject to vibration, ladder/step stool, traffic/roadways, driving light equipment and/or moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
