Hourly Salary Range: $22.26 - $29.12 (Guaranteed to start at Step 3 pay of $25.98) $1,000 yearly tool allowance.

 *ANNOUNCEMENTIf you do not currently have your CDL, the City will pay for the training needed in order to obtain it.*GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: 

The Heavy-Duty Mechanic / Emergency Vehicle Technician performs skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of all apparatus and equipment assigned to the Fire Department. The individual shall respond to major alarm fires as needed and assist in non-suppression work. An employee in this classification shall maintain a constant check on the condition of the apparatus at the scene. The individual may be required to deliver any supplies that are needed at the scene (i.e., fuel, coolant, lubricants, air tanks, and auxiliary equipment). The individual works under the supervision of the Fire Chief, the Staff Division Chief, or a designee.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: 

Must possess a thorough knowledge of automotive and heavy-duty truck repair and maintenance in order to perform the duties of a full journeyman Heavy Duty Mechanic and certified Emergency Vehicle Technician. Must have a thorough knowledge of Fire Department apparatus and equipment. Performs physical activity, including walking, bending, and stooping to repair vehicles. Ability to lift and move necessary automotive equipment.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:  

Diagnoses all mechanical and operational difficulties of vehicles. Repairs defects. Replaces worn and broken parts. Cleans fuel and cooling systems, including carburetors and radiators. Regulates timing. Makes proper adjustments to maintain vehicles in proper operating conditions. Repairs and/or replaces all electrical equipment, such as generators, alternators, starters, distributors, ignition systems, wiring, lighting, and other electrical work that makes the vehicle operate properly. Conducts road tests of vehicles after repair noting the performance of the engine, transmission (automatic or standard), clutch, brakes, and other component parts, with the repairs and safety factors, checked to satisfaction. Operates standard testing equipment used in modern garages. Repairs air conditioning systems. Straightens, welds, and fabricates metal as needed. Does body and paintwork as assigned. Does any carpentry work as needed on vehicles and/or equipment. Performs all other duties such as oil change, lubrication, tire changing, and minor running repairs. Performs mechanical tasks in the maintenance and rebuilding of fire pumps, ladders, hydraulic ladders, water towers, aerial platforms, hose reels, relief valves, water valves, pressure governors, flow meters, foam eductors, foam equipment, auxiliary coolers, drain systems, water tanks, remote control nozzles, hydraulic systems, and power converters. Performs small engine repairs on equipment, such as rescue tools, rescue saws, portable generators, fire station auxiliary generators, lawnmowers, and snowblowers. Repairs other Fire Department equipment such as nozzles and breathing air systems. Repairs any other specialized Fire Department apparatus and equipment, such as oxygen and suction systems on medic units, cots, etc. Periodically makes service calls to fire stations. Inspects firefighting equipment and checks on the efficiency of the equipment and makes adjustments and repairs as needed. Assists in annual pump tests. Assists in the instruction of drivers and operators of fire equipment and vehicles. Inspects and tests fire equipment and apparatus for proper operations. Makes road calls for emergency repairs and retrieves disabled vehicles. Performs bi-annual inspections of private ambulances. Other related duties, not listed but consistent with and similar in nature to the above examples, may also be required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of all Fire Department apparatus, pumps, and related equipment. Ability to operate special equipment such as a lathe, drill press, hydraulic press, power saw, and other automotive and machine shop equipment. Ability to maintain tools, work area, and office in a clean and orderly manner. Ability to perform all duties required of a full journeyman Heavy Duty Mechanic, including the following: the ability to repair all types of equipment owned and operated by the City of Canton. Thorough knowledge of trucks, loaders, pumps, graders, and all types of heavy-duty and automotive equipment. Ability to properly operate state-of-the-art tools.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

Must have a high school diploma or GED; must be a full journeyman Heavy Duty Mechanic; must have five years working experience on heavy-duty equipment and trucks with a strong background in diesel and hydraulic mechanics; or any other combination which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must be willing to attend training schools and classes when requested to do so.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: 

Must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Tank Endorsement within two (2) years of the date of hire. Must remain current with new developments in the automotive repair field. Must have own tools of the trade. Must have all current Emergency Vehicle Technician level certification requirements and obtain any future level certifications as determined by the Emergency Vehicle Technician Certification Commission, Inc. If not currently holding certification in all levels of the Emergency Vehicle Technician classification, must obtain all levels of certification within three years of appointment to the position of Emergency Vehicle Technician. Once all levels of Emergency Vehicle Technician certifications are obtained, they must be maintained. Recertification every five years is required by the Emergency Vehicle Technician Certification Commission, Inc. to maintain certifications.
