Position Summary: Under general supervision, performs a variety of community oriented policing duties for the Canon City Police Department in partnership with the Fremont RE-1 School District.

  • Performs law enforcement duties as a sworn police officer.
  • Upholds and enforces federal, state, and municipal criminal and traffic laws and ordinances.
  • Promotes a safe and nurturing school environment.
  • Assists in conflict resolution and conducts mediation between students, staff, and parents.
  • Investigates all criminal offenses in and/or around school campus to include notifications to all pertinent parties (parent/guardian, school officials, social service agencies, etc.).
  • Provides general school-based security during the school day.
  • Conducts environmental crime analysis surveys.
  • Develops and maintains exemplary working relationships with all members of the school staff, school board members and the superintendent of schools.
  • Reinforces bond with school-based community by attending faculty meetings, in-service training, neighborhood group meetings, and other appropriate events.
  • Provides excellent customer service to external and internal customers including but not limited to effectively listening and communicating, providing accurate information, offering solutions, assisting in resolution, and ensuring timely follow up as needed.

Non-Essential Duties and Responsibilities*: The following duties, although not essential to the position, are important components to the smooth and efficient operation of the Division, Department, and City.

  • Serves as guest speaker and teaches classes that promote law related education in age and grade appropriate ways.
  • Provides counseling by serving as a “referral agent” to student counseling.
  • Encourages staff and faculty to file state mandated child abuse/neglect reports to the SRO.
  • Serves as part of the school’s administrative team by attending administrative staff meetings and planning sessions.
  • Attends or completes trainings, seminars, and meetings as required.
  • Implements and manages youth-based programs such as the Junior Law Enforcement Academy.
  • Performs related duties as established by law or ordinance or as reasonably directed by the City.

  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, statutes, ordinances, rules, and regulations pertaining to law enforcement issues in Canon City.
  • Knowledge of the theory, principles, practices, and methods of criminal justice.
  • Knowledge of the theory, principles, practices, and methods of performing police officer duties.
  • Knowledge of laws pertaining to schools and legal issues therein.
  • Knowledge of school, social services, and external resources.
  • Knowledge of basic child development and psychology.
  • Ability to speak effectively to student groups, community events and organizations.
  • Possesses an even temper, patient attitude, and ability to de-escalate possibly volatile situations.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing including the preparation of reports and legal paperwork.
  • Familiar with basic computer functionality. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or related software. Knowledge of basic office equipment including but not limited to copiers, fax machines, multi-line phone systems, and calculators.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing excellent customer service. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Ability to build effective relationships as needed with employees, government officials, and the public.

Requirements

Minimum Qualification(s):

Experience

  • Must be at least Twenty-One (21) years of age at time of application.

Education

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • Field Training

Licenses/Certifications

  • Must have a valid Colorado Driver’s License, or the ability to obtain one within sixty (60) days of hire, with a driving record acceptable to the City of Canon City.
  • Certified Colorado Police Officer. (Certain criminal convictions may impact eligibility for post certification. Please review the Colorado POST website for additional information: https://post.colorado.gov/certification/disqualifying-incidents)

Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the listed knowledge, abilities and skills may be substituted.

Preferred Qualification(s):

Experience

  • Four years of experience as Police Officer I in the Canon City Police Department (CCPD), or one (1) year of experience with CCPD and five (5) years of experience with another law enforcement agency, or eight (8) years of experience with another law enforcement agency.
  • At least one (1) year in a School Security, Teaching, or School Resource Officer role.

Education

  • Field Training or Skills Instructor.
  • Advanced Classes totaling 100 hours of training; of which 40 hours must include leadership training.
  • Associate’s Degree in Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice, or Forensic Psychology.

Licenses/Certifications

  • Certification as a Basic School Resource Officer through the National Association of School Resource Officers.

While performing the duties of this job the employee will travel within the City of Canon City and Fremont County

  • This position works in an indoor and outdoor environment and requires the ability to perform physically demanding activities in a variety of settings.
  • Sometimes required to drive, including marked and unmarked police vehicles.
  • Occasionally required to lift up to 175 pounds.
  • Occasionally required to apprehend and subdue persons resisting arrest.
  • Occasionally exposed to hazardous and potentially lethal situations and individuals, including exposure to firearms, other weapons, explosives, toxins, traffic, and natural disasters

Additional Information:

  • Must successfully pass a background investigation.
  • Must successfully pass a Polygraph Test.
  • Must successfully pass a Psychological Evaluation.
  • This position will typically work Monday – Friday but will flex to working weekends and evenings based on seasonal, organizational or event needs.
  • This position will be required to attend occasional City Council meetings and/or other meetings and events after normal work hours.
  • Travel within the City of Canon City and Fremont County will be required.
  • Frequent extension of workday to meet deadlines.
