Position Summary: Under general supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled and unskilled tasks to construct and maintain parks, forest, trails, and/or cemeteries for the City of Canon City.

  • Performs grounds maintenance, landscaping, and tree maintenance tasks in city parks, cemetery, and rights-of-way.
  • Picks up litter, removes trash, rakes leaves, clears brush, operates irrigation systems, and mows grass.
  • Inspects and samples trees, plants, and grass for insect or disease problems. Applies herbicides and pesticides to control weeds and insects.
  • Performs rough carpentry, electrical, and plumbing tasks to install, repair, and maintain irrigation systems.
  • Cleans, repairs, and maintains public buildings, facilities, parks, public restrooms, campgrounds, recreational facilities, and cemetery.
  • Operates equipment such as trimmers, mowers, sprayers, power rakes, aerators, snow plows, trash compactors, dump trucks, loaders, trenchers, chippers, and chain saws to improve, maintain, and repair parks, trails, and/or cemeteries and to plant, prune, or remove trees.
  • Monitors equipment operation and reports repair and replacement needs. Performs routine maintenance and repairs on small equipment such as chainsaws, mowers, and weed eaters.
  • Installs culverts and drainage basins.
  • Erects barricades and signs.
  • Locates and excavates graves and makes burials.
  • Assists with storm clean up, park patrol, and enforcing park rules and regulations.

Non-Essential Duties and Responsibilities*: The following duties, although not essential to the position, are important components to the smooth and efficient operation of the Division, Department, and City.

  • Answers routine questions from public related to park, cemetery, and forestry areas.
  • Participates in on-call rotation for after-hours and weekends.
  • Some positions perform duties of Foreman during absences.
  • Performs related duties as established by law or ordinance or as reasonably directed by the City.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the mission, policies, goals and procedures of Cañon City relating to park, cemetery, and forestry, maintenance, and repair.
  • Knowledge of the practices and methods of operating equipment such as trimmers, mowers, sprayers, power rakes, aerators, snow plows, trash compactors, dump trucks, loaders, trenchers, chippers, and chain saws.
  • Knowledge of the safe use of hand tools and power tools such as electric saws, drills, cutters, chain saws, shovels, and rakes.
  • Knowledge of Material Safety Data Sheets for hazardous materials used in park maintenance, cemetery, and forestry operations.
  • Ability to operate equipment such as trimmers, mowers, sprayers, power rakes, aerators, snow plows, trash compactors, dump trucks, loaders, trenchers, chippers, and chain saws.
  • Improving, maintaining, and repairing parks, trails, and/or cemeteries.
  • Planting, pruning, and removing trees.
  • Ability to perform routine maintenance and repairs on small equipment such as chainsaws, mowers, and weed eaters.
  • Ability to perform rough carpentry, electrical, and plumbing tasks to install, repair, and maintain irrigation systems.
  • Ability to perform repair and maintenance duties in public buildings, facilities, parks, and cemetery.
  • Ability to perform grounds maintenance and landscaping.
  • Ability to perform performing burial duties.
  • Ability to use hand tools.
  • Ability to understand and follow spoken and/or written directions and/or diagrams.
  • Ability to communicate verbally with co-workers and the public.

Minimum Qualification(s):

Education

  • High School diploma, or Equivalent.

Experience

  • One year of experience in construction, general laborer, agriculture, or related field;

Licenses/Certifications

  • Must have a valid Colorado Driver’s License, or the ability to obtain within sixty (60) days of employment, with a driving record acceptable to the City of Canon City.
  • Ability to obtain a Colorado Class “B” Driver’s License within six months of hire. This deadline may be extended at the discretion of the Department Director.

Any acceptable combination of education, training and experience that provides the listed knowledge, abilities and skills may be substituted.

Physical Activities:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will travel within the City of Canon City and Fremont County; majority of work time will be indoors with low noise levels. Physical demands of job require some lifting; pulling; carrying and pushing of objects –approximately 15 pounds. Frequent bending, simple grasping, finger/manual dexterity, standing, walking, twisting upper body, stooping, and hearing. Occasional climbing on stairs. Communicates verbally with City staff, outside agencies and the public in one-on-one settings, group settings and over the telephone.]

Additional Information

  • This position will typically work Monday – Friday but will flex to working weekends and evenings based on seasonal, organizational or event needs.
  • This position will be required to attend occasional City Council meetings and/or other meetings and events after normal work hours.
  • Travel within the City of Canon City and Fremont County will be required.
  • Frequent extension of work day to meet deadlines.
