The City of Calistoga is now accepting applications for full time Plant Operator I/II.

This recruitment is to fill an existing full-time Plant Operator vacancy, and to establish an eligible list should a future vacancy occur.

The City

The City of Calistoga is located at the northern end of the Napa Valley, and has the charm of a small town and the sophistication of a world-class tourist destination. The City is famous for its natural hot springs, and has drawn residents and visitors to the Napa Valley for nearly 160 years. Calistoga offers outstanding regional cuisine and is the perfect place to relax and enjoy fine wines. The City is approximately 2.6 square miles with an estimated population of 5,348.

The City of Calistoga is a full-service city providing a full range of services including police and fire protection; planning activities; code enforcement and building inspections; park facilities, aquatics, and recreation programs; construction and maintenance of streets, public buildings, and other infrastructure facilities; water production and distribution; and wastewater collection, treatment, and recycling.

The Position of Plant Operator I/II

The Plant Operator I/II performs a variety of work in the operation, control, and maintenance of the City’s water and wastewater treatment, pumping, and storage tank facilities to ensure the adequate and uninterrupted supply of water to the City; operates equipment, facilities, wastewater collection and water distribution systems, pump stations, and related appurtenances as found in water and wastewater treatment plants; assists with preventive maintenance and makes minor repairs to plant facilities and equipment.
Job duties include, but not limited, to the following:

  • Monitors plant operations equipment and processes to ensure compliance with environmental and public health standards;
  • Reviews and analyzes automated information and control system data and revises equipment settings as appropriate;
  • Operates pumps, valves, chlorinators, telemetry controls, sludge presses, and other water and wastewater flow regulating controls and equipment;
  • Collects water, wastewater and other samples from various phases of the treatment process and performs standard chemical and physical tests on these samples;
  • Inspects and maintains water pipelines, pumps, valves, tanks, reservoirs, and related appurtenances;
  • Performs preventative and routine maintenance on a variety of equipment; performs a variety of general and ground maintenance activities;
  • Responds to water complaints and answers questions from public.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Plant Operator I

  • Education and Experience: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade. Some experience involving the installation, maintenance, and repair of water pumps and related systems is desirable.
  • Licenses and Certifications: Possession of a valid California Driver’s License. Possession of a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Grade I certification issued by the California State Water Resources Control Board. Possession of a Water Treatment Operator Grade I certification issued by the California State Water Resources Control Board. At a minimum the applicant shall have one of the two certificates and ability to obtain the other within 12-months.

Plant Operator II

  • Education and Experience: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade. Two years of increasingly responsible experience involving the routine operation of water and wastewater treatment plants and related equipment and systems.
  • Licenses and Certifications: Possession of a valid California Driver’s License. Possession of a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Grade II certification issued by the California State Water Resources Control Board. Possession of a Water Treatment Operator Grade II certification and a Grade D1 Distribution System License issued by the California State Water Resources Control Board. At a minimum the applicant shall have one of the two certificates and ability to obtain the other within 12-months.
