The City of Buena Park Fleet Maintenance Division is seeking a Fleet Mechanic with prior city experience to join the team. The Fleet Mechanic maintains and repairs City vehicles, trucks, tractors and other light and heavy power-driven equipment. The ideal candidate for this position is a hardworking team-oriented individual who is eager to learn, takes ownership, initiative, and accountability for their work, and possesses specialized knowledge of equipment maintenance procedures and use of diagnostic equipment. If this sounds like you, APPLY TODAY!GENERAL PURPOSEUnder general supervision, performs skilled and semi-skilled diagnostic, repair, and maintenance work on a variety of automotive vehicles, trucks, tractors, and other light and heavy power-driven equipment; and does related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICSThe Fleet Mechanic is distinguished from the general maintenance workers by its specialized knowledge of equipment maintenance procedures and use of diagnostic equipment. The Fleet Mechanic is differentiated from the Lead Fleet Mechanic which has additional responsibility for organizing daily service orders, assigning and completing the more difficult tasks, checking the work of employees, and coordinating outside repair work and parts orders with vendors and contractors.
Essential FunctionsThe duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the class.
Inspects, diagnoses, and locates technical and electrical malfunctions on city automobiles, trucks, and a variety of maintenance and construction equipment and related component systems, including alternative fuel/hybrid systems. Overhauls, repairs, maintains and adjusts a wide variety of gas and diesel-powered automotive, truck, and heavy equipment and their component and computerized systems, including, but not limited to, engines, transmissions, hydraulic or air brakes, clutches, differentials, fuel systems, generators, ignition systems, distributors and pumps, hydraulic systems, power plants, charging systems, power trains, heating and air conditioning units, and other components and units. Operates and maintains a complete set of hand, power, and shop tools and computerized diagnostic and test equipment used in the automotive and truck repair trade. Performs general maintenance services and repairs on cars, trucks and other equipment, including, but not limited to, grease and lubrication, battery service, tire change and repair, replacement of spark plugs, light bulbs, fan belts and other parts, gas and oil service, washing and cleaning of exteriors and interiors of vehicles, and other standard vehicle maintenance duties. Reads and interprets schematics, shop manuals, and other related materials in order to perform work assignments and to stay abreast of the current technology; access technical information from automated databases and technical manuals. Fabricates and modifies parts, equipment, and vehicles as required by the user department. Performs welding, braising, soldering, and cutting operations. Picks up and delivers vehicles and needed parts and supplies. Completes basic work records and material logs. Follows safe working practices; maintains a clean and orderly work and shop area.
Qualifications GuidelinesKnowledge of:Practices, techniques, materials, tools and equipment used in the diagnosis, repair and modification of a wide variety of technical equipment, including automobiles, trucks, and heavy equipment, and their component systems; preventive maintenance practices and techniques; regulations, standards and guidelines pertaining to the work; current technology in repairing and diagnosing vehicles, equipment and their component systems; operation and repair characteristics of the entire range of city-owned light and heavy equipment; welding techniques and methods; effective customer service techniques.
Ability ToInspect and correctly diagnose malfunctions in gas and diesel-powered equipment; use tools and test equipment associated with the automotive and heavy equipment trade; use gas and electric welding and cutting apparatus; perform technical repairs and adjustments within the time frames established; perform preventative maintenance and replacement functions; read and interpret manuals, schematics, plans, and specifications; prepare and maintain a variety of shop time keeping and repair records; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; understand and follow oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, management, vendors, and the general public.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDSThe physical and mental demands described here are representative of those that must be met by employees to successfully perform the essential functions of this class. Physical DemandsWhile performing the duties of this class, employees are regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach above and below shoulder level with hands and arms. Employees are required to frequently stand and walk in work areas and occasionally sit while completing records and reports, and talk and hear.
Employees are expected to stoop, squat, crawl, lie on their backs while facing upward, and work within confined physical spaces. Employees may climb stairs or small stools, and lift and carry parts and equipment typically weighing less than 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this class include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
Mental DemandsWhile performing the duties of this class, an employee is regularly required to use oral and written communication skills; read and interpret documents; analyze and solve basic problems; use math and mathematical reasoning; observe and interpret situations; learn and apply new information or new skills; and interacts with co-workers, management, contractors, vendors, and the public.
ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDSThe employee works indoors and outdoors while assessing and working on fleet equipment. The employee is exposed to alternating coldness, heat, dust, oils, greases, fumes, moisture, wetness, and various cleaning agents. Employees must periodically pick up, deliver, and test-drive equipment. The noise level is loud when employees are operating power tools and equipment.
Education/Training/ExperienceHigh School graduation or G.E.D. equivalent AND two years of experience performing diagnostic and repair duties on a wide variety of vehicles and equipment, including diesel, gas-powered equipment and their component electronic and computerized systems is required. Licenses/Certificates/Special RequirementsValid Class C California driver license, an acceptable driving record, and evidence of insurance are required. Class B California commercial learners permit is required upon hire and Class B California driver license is required within one year of appointment to this position.
National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) A6 Electrical/Electronic Systems and/or A8 Engine Performance certification is highly desirable. APPLICANT INFORMATION/EXAM WEIGHT

Physical ExaminationEmployment offers are conditional based, upon the successful completion of a medical examination which may include drug and alcohol screening. Physicals are performed by the City's designated physician at the City's expense.
Below is a list of key benefits offered to employees of the City of Buena Park and is only a summary of benefits. They are not intended to replace or modify the legal plan documents on file in the Human Resources Department.
SALARY RANGE: Composed of six (6) steps - Entry step through E step (Except management positions). Each step represents an increase of approximately five (5) percent.
RETIREMENT: Provided through California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS). Employee pays member contribution.
VACATION: Earned at the rate of ten (10) working days per year for the first five (5) years of service. Public safety employees receive a different but equivalent benefit. Additional vacation may be earned by employees after five (5) years of service.
SICK LEAVE: Accumulated on the basis of eight (8) hours per month with no maximum accumulation.
HOLIDAYS:An average of eleven (11) holidays per year.
MEDICAL INSURANCE: Several plans (indemnity and HMO's) are available. The City pays a flat rate portion of the premium according to the bargaining unit agreement.
DENTAL INSURANCE: Three (3) plans are available. The City pays a flat rate portion of the premium. The Employee may pay a portion of the insurance premium according at bargaining unit agreement and this benefit is voluntary.
VISION INSURANCE: One plan is available. The Employee pays the insurance premium and this benefit is voluntary.
LIFE INSURANCE: Amount of coverage is based on the employee bargaining unit. Premiums are fully paid by the City.
LONG TERM DISABILITY: Fully paid by the City. Police sworn personnel are not eligible.
EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM: Available to all City employees and their immediate families.
DEFERRED COMPENSATION PLAN: The City offersone (1) plan administered by Nationwide Retirement Solutions. This is a voluntary benefit with no City contribution.
WORK SCHEDULE: 9/80, 4/10 or 3/12 alternative work schedule depending upon the work location.
OC CREDIT UNION: Available to all City employees and their families.
