Pay: $3,536 per month / $20.40 per hour
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Technician III is responsible for the efficient repair and operation of all trucks and equipment but primarily those classified as heavy. Responsibilities extend to operating the equipment to insure operational status. Welds and fabricates as necessary to effect proper repairs. Participates in trainings related to computerized system controls. Heavy equipment for the city is described as, but not limited to, loaders, dozers, excavators, compactors, trash trucks, brush trucks, dump trucks, scrapers, graders, fire engines and aerial trucks. Must be willing to adopt and exhibit the City of Brownwood “I SERVE” Core Values.
EXAMPLES OF SPECIFIC WORK PERFORMED: 1) Performs welding and fabrication with good skills; 2) Have knowledge of hydraulic theory and performs related repair; 3) Performs efficient diagnostics; 4) Does complete system repair i.e. brakes, transmission, differentials; 5) Process paperwork and work orders in a timely and accurate manner; 6) Proficient diesel engine repair; 7) Maintain work area, tools and equipment (including service truck) in a neat and clean manner; 8) Complete air-conditioning repair; 9) Make service calls and may tow vehicles or equipment; 10) Participate in training on the job such as computerized engine, transmission and brake controls; 11) Complete continued education courses and become certified in areas consistent with expertise; 12) Perform other duties as assigned by Supervisor.
POSITIONS SUPERVISED: Employees as assigned.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Ability to transport self from site to site. Ability to drive various types of equipment and vehicles to and from various worksites. Employee will work in extreme temperatures, standing, walking, bending, kneeling, twisting, climbing, and lifting in order to maintain or repair the City’s fleet. Employee will work with chemicals, mechanical, electrical and traffic hazards. Employee will work in confined spaces, trenches and in streets where extreme hazards exist while performing duties. Employee is frequently required to perform heavy lifting and carrying of materials weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally material weighing up to 100 pounds. Employee will be exposed to poor lighting, dirt, dust, noises, fumes, odors, water, and mud. Employee must be able to walk on slippery, loose, uneven, and sloped surfaces. The machinery operated can be dangerous unless operated in a safe manner.
CONTACT WITH OTHERS: Frequent contact with other employees.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or G.E.D. required. Three years or more experience in maintenance and repair of a wide variety of motorized equipment, two years of welding in automotive or construction field, and one-year tire repair of all types. At least one year experience in maintenance and repair of heavy equipment. Prefer completion of some technical schooling.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Must have the knowledge of principles, materials and tools associated with the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment, and the ability to use same in a safe manner; Skill to diagnose and correct vehicle defects using hand tools and electronic equipment; The ability to read and write and calculate costs involved in repairs.
REQUIRED LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES: Valid Texas Class A Driver’s License. Will be required to obtain an ASE A1 Engine Repair Certification, ASE A6 Electrical Systems Certification, ASE T2 Diesel Engine Certification, ASE T4 Brake Certification within (2) year of hire date or as budget allows.
