The City of Brighton Finance Department is hiring an Accounting Technician to support the team during a financial system implementation. This position will provide support in areas including accounts payable and receivable, general revenues, and monthly journal entry processing. Please note this is a TERM position with an end date of 10/31/2025. 
Tech I Range - $21.35 -$29.25
Tech II Range - $23.93- $32.77
DEFINITION
Performs a variety of accounting and customer service duties in accordance with standard accounting and office procedures across multiple areas in the Finance Department. This includes but may not be limited to sales tax, utility billing, accounts payable, accounts receivable, customer service and collections. Reviews and verifies data for completeness and accuracy; codes regular entries for distribution to accounts; reconciles account records. This position must work well independently and with teams, while providing excellent, respectful customer service and human relations skills, which support the City of Brighton’s mission and values.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Under the direction of the Utility Billing Supervisor, Tax Audit Supervisor or Assistant Finance Director, or as assigned.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Participates in a variety of duties relating to the continuous work flow of the Finance Department; assists in preparing reports; recommends improvements in work flow, procedures, and use of equipment and forms related to the utility billing, sales tax, accounts receivable or accounts payable functions. Reconciles accounts and investigates balances as instructed. Responds to customer complaints and requests for information on regulations, procedures, systems, account balances, and rate and fee inquiries in a timely and professional manner. Provides assistance to other finance staff and/or departments as requested; responds to inquiries in a timely and accurate manner regarding accounting or billing issues. Operates a variety of office equipment such as computer, calculator, copy machine, postage meter, check signing machine and fax machine. Uses standard office software such as Word, Excel and multiple billing systems. Performs data entry of numerical data from a variety of written or printed sources. Performs other duties and responsibilities as required.
Accounting Technician I (Entry Level)
Work is generally task oriented and routine in nature. Follows instruction and is subject to close supervision. Must pass 10-key and Data Entry Test.
Accounting Technician II
Performs troubleshooting to reconcile account balances and inquiries to obtain further information or verify unusual data. Ability to work independently with supervision available as needed. Must be able to pass Microsoft Office Excel and Accounting Test.
QUALIFICATIONS
Accounting Technician I Knowledge of:
Knowledge of policies, procedures of the department/division as it relates to accounting and bookkeeping. Basic principles and practices of fiscal, statistical and administrative data collection, reconciling, processing and report preparation. English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation. Mathematical computations, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and calculating percentages. Modern office procedures, programs, methods and computer equipment. Principles and procedures of record keeping. Public relations/customer service techniques.
Ability to:
Organize and maintain complex technical filing systems Make an effort to improve skills; exert effort needed to make sure the job is done correctly. Complete actions to the satisfaction of the person making the request. Complete and follow-up citizen or staff contacts. Efficiently operate a computer terminal. Must be open and honest in all communication. Establish and maintain effective work relationships with City officials, vendors, co-workers, the public and others contacted in the course of every day work assignments.
Accounting Technician II
In addition to the previous requirements: Knowledge of the general principles, methods, techniques, and practices of utility billing, state and local sales tax regulations, accounts receivable and accounts payable. Skill in accurately preparing, reviewing, verifying, and entering routine financial data into computer programs. Ability to organize projects, analyze options and exercise independent judgment. Ability to prepare and review automated monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports. Ability to make account adjustments as needed. Ability to research, interpret, understand and follow complex statues, ordinances, regulations, standards and guidelines. High level of computer literacy including mastery of internal account package and strong spreadsheet skills.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Accounting Technician I-High school diploma or GED; One (1) year of bookkeeping, accounting, billing or sales tax experience and two (2) years of customer service. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered. Accounting Technician II- Associate degree in accounting, business, or closely related field. Four(4) years of bookkeeping, accounting, billing, or sales tax experience and/or training. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to perform sedentary physical work, and to lift and carry up to 10 pounds and occasionally 20 pounds; ability to walk, sit, reach, grasp and perform similar body movements; Possess hand/eye coordination adequate to operate office equipment, keyboards, calculator and telephone; ability to talk and hear in person and by telephone and to hear computer malfunctions; ability to see and read instructions, financial statements and documents, and characters on a computer monitor.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Bilingual Spanish/English strongly preferred. Ability to complete FEMA ICS 100 and IS 700 training within six (6) months of hire.
