Welcome to the City of Box Elder, the "Gateway to the Black Hills" and home to Ellsworth Air Force Base. We are a small but dedicated group of professionals who take pride in our work and love serving our vibrant community.

The City of Box Elder is located just outside of Rapid City in the beautiful western side of South Dakota. Nestled close to the famous "Black Hills," we are only a short distance to miles of hiking trails, skiing/snowboarding within 45 minutes, and countless other natural wonders all within a short drive. Kayaking, hot springs, mountain climbing, mountain biking, and many other outdoor activities can all be found in our backyard.

The Box Elder Police Department is seeking motivated and hard-working individuals with a desire to serve our community as full-time Police Officers. We work to maintain a highly trained, technically advanced, professional force where respect, teamwork and camaraderie are our culture.

This position is responsible for the enforcement of federal, state, and local laws and the protection of life and property. Qualified candidates should have their law enforcement certification or be enrolled in a vocational school or police academy program with eligibility to test for reciprocity.

Box Elder Police Officers typically work 10-hour shifts, 4 days per week on a varying schedule that rotates every 2-4 months. Officers patrol the city, respond to calls for service, conduct investigations, enforce traffic laws, conduct code enforcement, arrest offenders, provide assistance to other emergency service providers and engage the community and its members in a positive, professional manner.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: High School diploma or G.E.D.

Age: Must be 21 years of age or will be 21 years of age within 6 months of application.

Criminal History: No felony or domestic violence conviction.

License: Valid South Dakota driver's license upon 90 days of residence in the state.

Certification: Applicants must hold a current law enforcement certification in South Dakota, have the ability to transfer another state or federal certification to South Dakota through the reciprocity process, or are currently enrolled or have completed a police academy program that makes them eligible for reciprocity testing. A South Dakota officer whose certification is inactive or expired is also eligible if that certification may qualify for reactivation.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

A candidate receiving a conditional offer of employment will undergo several pre-employment checks.

BENEFITS:

80 hours of accrued annual vacation (for the first year, increase based on years of service); 10 hours of PTO earned per month, 10 Floating holidays; 100% Employer paid employee Health, Dental, Vision premiums, Life Insurance and Retirement benefits; other optional benefits. Employees will be enrolled in the South Dakota Retirement System with an 8% employer match from the City of Box Elder.
