Job Description Summary: Under the direct supervision of the Aquatics Program Specialist. Lifeguard Instructors lead, instruct and motivate participants through the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Class. They are responsible for coaching participants through safe and effective skills progressions by teaching to the standard but testing to the objective. This includes motivating energetically, providing feedback, assessing strengths and weaknesses, clear communication and the ability to follow the facility rules and guidelines. Job Description: ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Instructs youth and adults in lifeguard training. Tests and evaluates class participants. Enforces rules, regulations, and policies; maintains safety, order and discipline of participants, and/or players, and/or customers. Performs customer relations role which can include interacting with parents, participants, business or program partners, and/or city staff to provide information and solve problems. Works as part of a team, attending training, orientation and/or staff meetings as needed Lifeguard Instructors may work at any of the following locations: East Boulder Community Center, North Boulder Recreation Center, South Boulder Recreation Center, Scott Carpenter Pool, Spruce Pool. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Interest, desire and ability to provide excellent customer service. Tactful and effective communication skills. Clean and neat appearance. Have the swim abilities of the standard for the American Red Cross Lifeguard program. Ability to organize information and follow established procedures. Ability to work well with youth and adults. Available and willing to work scheduled hours. Available shifts are variable and flexible. Effective interpersonal skills, including conflict resolution skills. Have and maintain acceptable background information, including criminal conviction history. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Weekday, weeknight and weekend availability (preferred, not required) REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Certification SUPERVISION Supervision Received: Water Safety Program Lead Supervision Exercised: None WORKING CONDITIONS AND REQUIREMENTS Physical and Mental Effort Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities that permits the employee to communicate effectively on the telephone and in person and operate sound equipment. Sufficient vision or other powers of observation that permits the employee to review, evaluate and prepare a variety of written documents and materials, and students’ swim form. Sufficient manual dexterity that permits the employee to operate computer equipment and other office equipment. Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, which permits the employee to work in an office setting. Ability to work under stress from demanding deadlines, public contact, and changing priorities and conditions. Work Environment Works primarily in a clean, comfortable environment.
