Position Summary

The primary function of an employee in this position is to perform general labor maintenance and repair work on City streets and rights-of-ways while assisting other street maintenance operators and specialists. This is an entry level position; an employee in this class may be assigned to other maintenance duties in the City’s Public Works Department. The principal duties of this position are performed in an outdoor environment that may include working in adverse weather conditions and hazards involving the use of power tools, heavy equipment and exposure to hazardous and allergenic materials. Due to the on-call nature of this position, the working hours vary and may include weekends, evenings and holidays.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Performs scheduled and assigned maintenance, repair, and service work on City streets, rights-of-ways, sidewalks, curbs, alleys, medians, and retention basins;
  • Maintains road rights-of-ways, seasonally operating dump trucks or other light trucks, front-end loaders, pavers, pavement rollers, sweepers, snow plowing and sanding trucks, and other required equipment;
  • Assists in asphalt and concrete repair and replacement, including operation of cutters and saws, setting forms, and finishing;
  • Removes debris and other safety hazards from streets, curbs, storm drains, alleys, and adjacent public areas;
  • Maintains and repairs street signs and striping;
  • Assists in equipment maintenance;
  • Performs weed control and abatement duties;
  • Maintains compliance with Federal, State, County, City and other applicable public health, environmental and safety standards;
  • Performs other related duties and may perform sanitation collection duties as required;

Specialized Knowledge

  • Idaho driver’s license with Class B CDL, and air brake endorsement;
  • Begin course work for Road Scholar – Level 1
  • Herbicide applicator certification may be required;
  • Methods, materials, procedures, and standard practices of street and right-of-way maintenance, vegetation control and removal, and related duties;
  • Methods, materials, procedures, and standard practices of street and right-of-way construction and repair, including concrete and asphalt repair, removal, and replacement;
  • Methods, materials, procedures, and standard practices of snow removal, sanding, and de-icing;
  • Heavy and construction equipment operation and routine maintenance;
  • Methods, techniques, and equipment for application of herbicides and weed control chemicals;

Experience, Skills & Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalency is required, and some experience in equipment operation or general labor tasks is preferred; OR any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work;
  • Accurately follow written and oral instructions;
  • Operate standard office equipment, including a computer using program applications appropriate to assigned duties;
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with supervisors, the public, and other employees.

Essential Physical Abilities

Sufficient clarity of speech, hearing, manual dexterity and personal mobility and stamina, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to:

  • discern verbal instructions, communicate with other employees and the public, and discern warning or emergency alarms, including vehicle backup warnings;
  • comprehend written work instructions and work orders, technical and operational documents and diagrams, and read and record meters and gauges;
  • operate a variety of power and hand tools, including specialized meter reading equipment, and to make adjustments to equipment;
  • frequently lift and/or move objects up to 80 pounds, and work in an outdoor field environment

Sufficient visual acuity required by this job, with or without reasonable accommodation, including close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
