Description

The City of Battle Creek is looking for a Equipment Operator in water distribution to perform intermediate technical work relating to the installation and maintenance of water and sewer mains, service line connections, hydrants, valves, manholes, and inlets, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work performed under the limited supervision of the Foreman II.

Examples of Duties

• Performs a variety of construction, maintenance, operational, and repair activities on water or sewer systems. Operates a backhoe, hydro-excavator, front-end loader, dump truck, air compressor, and other power-driven equipment including tapping machines, hydra-stop, pumps, sand blaster, painting devices, cutoff saws, and pipe cutters.
• Assists in the installation and repair of water and sewer mains; cleans and tests water and sewer systems.
• Communicates with customers regarding service and service outages. Notifies the public of service interruptions and boil water advisories and cancellations. Documents work, completes work orders, and prepares other necessary documentation. Enters data in work order management systems on office and mobile devices.
• Maintains, repairs and replaces water valves, hydrants, service lines and curb stops, manholes, and inlets. Performs routine manual labor, such as painting, cutting weeds, assisting in snow removal, and cleaning storm sewer inlets. Digs and enters trenches, taps mains, caulks joints, cuts, threads and lays pipe, constructs manholes and catch basins. Forms, pours and finishes concrete.
• Utilizes electronic and paper copy records in determining location and function of underground infrastructure

Typical Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• 1-3 years experience in underground construction, water operation or plumbing.

• Ability to obtain a valid Class “A” Commercial driver’s license and Tanker Endorsement within probationary period.
• Valid driver's license in the State of Michigan.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:
This work requires frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, sitting, bending, reaching, hand dexterity (grasping, holding, keyboarding, repetitive movements), reading, writing, eye-hand coordination, seeing (near and/or far, color, depth, field of vision), hearing, using the telephone, contact with government officials and the general public, working overtime, and working inside and alone. Work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to fumes or airborne particles, frequently requires exposure to wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working in high, precarious places, working within excavations, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock, work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
