City of Bainbridge Island is Hiring a Seasonal Maintenance Worker Near Operations & Maintenance Facility, WA

Each year, the City hires several seasonal maintenance workers to work for 4-5 months, depending on operational needs and availability of those hired. The timeframe is fairly flexible.
This is an outstanding opportunity to learn more about City operations, work as a member of a high-performing team and gain knowledge and experience in a variety of areas of maintenance.

Under the direction of the Public Works Supervisor or designee, the Seasonal Maintenance Worker performs a variety of manual labor and semi-skilled maintenance tasks in support of City street, stormwater, facilities, fleet, water and wastewater maintenance operations while utilizing a variety of hand tools and gas-powered and hydraulic-operated small equipment. Work consists of routine and repetitive tasks, processes, and/or operations and will be performed cooperatively with other employees or independently. Work will be completed in a manner that ensures individual, co-worker, and public safety and is performed in all weather and working conditions. Employees receive direct supervision while on the job site in most cases, but the amount of direct supervision required may diminish as proficiency in task performance and equipment operation increases.

  • Maintain City right-of-ways and easements including mowing, blowing, edging, raking leaves, weeding, and removing trash.
  • Assist with repair of potholes; patch and seal pavement cracks.
  • Assist with the repair and maintenance of storm drainage systems.
  • Operate push mowers, edgers, weed eaters, blowers, rakes, brooms, shovels, hoes and other related grounds maintenance tools and equipment.
  • Perform vegetation control duties within public right-of-ways, including flower baskets, landscape beds and turf areas.
  • Remove vegetation from detention and retention ponds.
  • Clean walkways and parking lots around buildings.
  • Perform minor building repairs.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • Maintain timely and regular attendance.
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A high school diploma or GED equivalent is preferred.
Ability to:
  • Communicate effectively with the public and colleagues, and respond to customers tactfully and courteously in stressful work situations.
  • Learn how to operate safely the equipment and machinery necessary to perform assigned tasks.
  • Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others and comply with all safety and environmental regulations.
  • Use a variety of potentially hazardous equipment, commercial vehicles, hand tools and equipment safely.
LICENSING AND CERTIFICATION:
  • Must be at least 18 years of age at time of hire.
  • Valid Washington driver's license is required.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The regular work schedule is variable, with weeks occasionally or frequently exceeding 30 hours, but not guaranteed. The work schedule is generally 6:30 am to 4 pm on weekdays, with a weekday off every other week. The work schedule may be changed as required to address work related needs. Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions. The incumbent may work on public facilities and/or roadways, be exposed to traffic hazards, possibly at night or in inclement weather. Among the hazards encountered are dampness, direct sunlight, communicable disease, dust, pollen, pesticides, insecticides, insect stings, noxious odors, vibration, moving mechanical parts, fumes or chemicals, and smoke. Hazardous areas routinely encountered include open ditches, heavy machinery, excessive noise and vehicular traffic. Special protective clothing may be required for completion of job requirements. Some sites may include remote locations requiring the incumbent to walk over rough terrain. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The Seasonal Maintenance Worker must have overall stamina and ability to perform strenuous physical activity. Job requirements may include the ability to stand, walk, sit, climb, bend, kneel, and work in tight or confined areas. The incumbent must be able to stand or walk for long periods of time; use hand tools; traverse rough terrain; work in or over water; work at heights or on a scaffolding; and lift or carry up to 25 pounds on a frequent basis, 25-50 pounds on an occasional basis and lift or move 50-100 pounds with assistance. In addition, close vision, color vision, depth perception, and far vision are essential to performance of the position. Corrective lenses may be utilized. The incumbent must be able to hear alarms and have the ability to audibly identify the presence of a danger or hazard.
BENEFITS: 
This is a temporary position and is not eligible for most City-paid benefits, with the exception of sick leave. One hour of sick leave is earned for every 40 hours worked.
