The City of Avondale is currently seeking Swim Lesson Instructors in the Avondale Parks & Recreation Department. This is a temporary position expected to work during the aquatic season. First review of applications will be conducted on Monday, January 29th, 2024.
Supports daily program operations of the Avondale Aquatic Center including instructing all age groups in swimming or diving skills, monitoring the safety of patrons utilizing the facility, educating patrons on safe facility conduct, and as needed, providing life-saving rescues for patrons in distress.
This position is temporary, typically lasting no longer than six (6) months in duration. The operational needs of the Avondale Aquatic Center will be frequently monitored to determine the duration of this assignment.
All candidates are required to undergo a comprehensive background check and pre-employment drug test. Successful completion of these processes is mandatory before an offer of employment is extended. Additionally, candidates for this position may be subject to participation in random drug testing.
This position requires you to be at least 15 years of age by the time of hire.Plans, leads, and executes learning activities for class groups of all ages.
Monitors activities at a City-operated swimming pool to prevent accidents and to rescue swimmers in danger of drowning up to 12 feet of depth.
Cautions swimmers regarding unsafe practices and safety hazards.
Maintains order in the pool and adjoining areas and administers first aid which includes resuscitation techniques requiring physical stamina and other first aid measures.
Rescues patrons in distress including approaching, and carrying people, which requires removal of patrons from the water who may weigh from 50 – 300 pounds.
Completes reports associated with accidents and incidents, conducts water chemical/clarity checks, facility cleaning duties, removes debris from the pool and adjoining areas, and provides general pool information to patrons.
Performs maintenance tasks which include moving high-pressure hoses approximately 200 feet, sweeping and scrubbing bathrooms and pool tile, emptying garbage cans, and setting up and taking down folding chairs and tables.
Operates cash register by accurately handling cash and following prescribed cash handling procedures.
Performs related duties as assigned.A Valid Lifeguard Certification, Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for the Professional Rescuer Certification, and Swim Lesson Instructor (SLI) Certification, or equivalent by date of hire.
While direct experience is not mandatory for this position, candidates must be a minimum of 15 years old upon hire.Learning job-related material and reviewing updated policies and procedures, guidelines, rules and regulations, and other articles related to operations.
Make simple accounting calculations.
Ability to prepare, write, and edit professional documents related to the activities and operation of the aquatic center.
This position has no supervisory or organizational control responsibilities.
Uses judgment to determine if patrons are safely and properly conducting themselves.
Communicate effectively with staff and the public. Tactfully enforcing pool safety and educating the public on safe pool conduct. Act quickly in response to emergencies. Guide patrons of all ages participating in swimming and/or diving instruction.
