Minimum Qualifications
This position will be filled at one of the following levels depending upon candidate qualifications:
Archivist I:
  • Master’s degree in Library or Information Science, or related to the assigned program from an ALA accredited university, with specialization in archival enterprise and/or administration; or must be received within six (6) months of employment.
  • Master’s degree in History/Public History with coursework in archival administration, or a Master’s Degree in a related field, may substitute for the required Master’s degree in Library or Information Science.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
May require a valid operator’s license and the use of a personal vehicle.
Archivist II:
  • Master’s degree in Library or Information Science, or related to the assigned program from an ALA accredited university, with specialization in archival enterprise and/or administration, plus two (2) years professional experience working in an archives, library, museum, or other cultural heritage institution
  • Master’s degree in History/Public History with coursework in archival administration, or a Master’s Degree in a related field, may substitute for the required Master’s degree in Library or Information Science.
Licenses or Certifications:
May require a valid operator’s license and the use of a personal vehicle.
Notes to Applicants
This position will be filled as an Archivist I, or an Archivist II, depending on the level of experience of the selected candidate.
The Archivist position involves processing archival collections related to the Latine Community, providing reference services to the public, and organizing public programs related to the same community. The person in this position will also identify, acquire, and organize archival collections and materials related to Latine heritage in Austin and Travis County. They will develop and implement public programs and events that highlight Latine history in the community, and compile finding aids, reference guides, articles, statistics, and reports. In addition, they will provide archival reference and research services to the public, both in person and via email. They will also engage in public liaison activities, such as giving lectures, making media appearances, and participating in interviews related to Latine history in Travis County. The person in this position will collaborate with other organizations to plan and execute programs related to Latine history. They will also coordinate and conduct meetings, trainings, tours, and public programs for the public and staff. They will assist in planning exhibits by organizing and interpreting historical records for public presentations related to Latines in Austin and Travis County and collecting oral histories documenting Latine history in Travis County. Finally, they will coordinate and supervise volunteer activities & tasks.

TRAVEL:
If you are selected for this position, and meet the Driver Safety Standards in the City of Austin Driver Safety Program, you may drive when necessary to multiple locations as part of your regular job duties. Otherwise, you are responsible for getting to and from these locations.

SALARYRANGE:
Archivist I = $25.40-$30.10
Archivist II = $27.16- $32.87

Monday-Friday
9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
  • May be required to work during special events, evenings, and weekends.
  • Hours are based on community outreach, events, and departmental needs.
  • At least one weekend per month is required for Reading Room shifts.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the history of the Mexican American and/or Latine communities in Austin or Travis County.
  • Experience working and connecting with community partners from under-represented populations.
  • Experience creating, planning, and implementing community programs and events to engage the Mexican American and/or Latine Community.
  • Experience appraising, organizing, processing, and conserving archival collections and materials.
  • Experience conducting oral history interviews.
  • Experience answering archival/historically-related reference questions from the public.
