City of Augusta, GA is Hiring a Crime Scene Technician Near Augusta, GA

DESCRIPTION

Assist Crime Scene Investigators during criminal investigations of crime scenes that may assist courts with judicial proceedings within the guidelines of the Criminal Code of Georgia, federal statutory law, procedural laws, department directives, standard operating procedures, and county ordinances. Reports to Lieutenant or other designated person, and works with the general public, commercial business representatives, judges, attorneys, health care representatives, co-workers, suspects, persons involved in and convicted of criminal acts, and law enforcement representatives from federal, state, and local agencies to provide law enforcement support.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Respond to crime scenes and document the scene, examine evidence, and analyze any evidence for additional processing.
  • Processing and preservation of evidence from crime scenes.
  • Assists in determining the chain of events leading to the commission of crimes through the use of accepted forensic and crime scene processing procedures.
  • Prepares detailed reports of work performed.
  • Coordinate and cooperate with prosecuting attorneys to present evidence and information during judicial proceedings.
  • Assists other law enforcement agencies with investigations by providing information on criminal activities and by providing assistance with crime scene processing, analyzing evidence, and evidence collection when needed.
  • Assists in the investigation of assigned cases to determine the circumstances of criminal activities and evidence validity.
  • Assisting in maintaining the cleanliness of the work areas and assist other Crime Scene Technicians with tasks related to pending cases.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
POSITION SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES MIGHT INCLUDE:
  • Documenting scenes through written reports, photographs, and/or video.
  • Process evidence by applying scientific methods and techniques from training and experience.
  • Prepare for trial and testify as an expert witness.
  • Assisting in the locating and preserving evidence at crime scenes for later use in prosecution.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: High School Diploma or G.E.D.
Experience: Crime Scene, Law Enforcement, and/or Forensic experience in an educational/ hands-on environment through internships or previous work experiences.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • General knowledge of federal and state laws, penal codes, constitutional guidelines, local ordinances, and departmental rules and regulations, county geographical area, criminal investigation methods, judicial processes and proceedings, and crime scene processing methods used to collect and preserve evidence.
  • Familiarity with using photography and, audio and video equipment, radios, and operating motor vehicles.
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently.
  • General knowledge of firearms and firearm safety.
  • General knowledge of controlled drugs and safe handling of controlled substances.
Skills:
  • Possess or have ability to obtain a valid state operator/driver's license for the type vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Basic skills of evidence processing to include general fingerprinting skills, biological collection, chemical testing, etc..
  • Time management/case management
  • Working abilities to be independent and to work in a group setting.Certification: Have or be willing to obtain the GPSTC certification for Crime Scene Technician
    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
    Depending upon area of assignment:
    Positions in this class typically require: standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, restraining persons and repetitive motions. Work is performed in an office setting, an automobile, and field sites with exposure to noise, diseases, cold and inclement weather that may require the use of protective devices.
    Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.

OTHER

  • This position requires staff call up in an emergency situation.
  • More than 50% of this position requires travel from the office to other locations.
