Under the direction of the Natural Resources Coordinator, individual will be an integral part to the Natural Resources division duties including forestry, water resources, and environmental protection efforts.
The intern will identify trees infected with oak wilt, Dutch elm disease and Emerald ash borer (EAB) on public and private property within the City of Apple Valley. The intern will provide preventive treatment recommendations and follow up inspections to assure compliance with shade tree management protocols. The intern will assist in a variety of water resources improvement efforts. This will include inspecting private and public best management practices, such as ponds, lakes, and raingardens. Position will also assist in collecting water quality samples on area lakes and ponds. Position provides recommendations for invasive species management at City owned facilities and assists in the inspection and closure of permitted construction projects impacting natural resources.
Work will involve frequent communication with the public during field inspections, phone conversations, and email. Job duties may also include: tree inventory, tree and pest identification, water resources projects, education and outreach, planting and watering. this position will require spending a significant amount of time outdoors.

• Inspect the City of Apple Valley via City vehicle and foot travel for oak wilt, Dutch elm disease, and EAB infected trees, mark trees with paint, and record information for City data base.
• Diagnose oak wilt, Dutch elm disease, and EAB based on observed symptoms, sample collection and other resources.
• Re-inspect trees diagnosed to assure compliance with City Ordinance requirements.
• Use computer, GIS data, and field measurements to identify property boundaries and owners of diseased trees or stormwater system features.
• Assist with other Natural Resources Division work including water resources, invasive species management, tree preservation efforts, and erosion control.
• Other duties as assigned.

• Currently enrolled in (or graduated from) forestry, natural resources, horticulture, or a closely related field.
• Possess or have the ability to obtain a Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Tree Inspector License before starting.
• Experience or training with urban forestry, identifying tree diseases or pests, and making non-biased recommendations to property owners.
• Ability to communicate effectively with the public and City employees in English both orally and in writing.
• Ability to work cooperatively with City staff and departments.
• Ability to effectively handle requests for information and concerns from the public or other City staff.
• Ability to maneuver difficult outdoor terrain and withstand working in extreme temperatures.
• Ability to lift up to 25lbs, occasionally up to 50lbs. Ability to operate hand tools and City vehicles in a safe and appropriate manner.
• Possess a valid driver's license and have an excellent driving record.

Employment offer will be contingent on driving and criminal background check.
Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., flexible start date and employment not to extend beyond 6 months.
