The City of Ankeny is accepting applications for a
Combination Inpector I in the Community Development Department. As part of the Building and Zoning division, this position inspects and performs checks on plans for residential buildings and structures to confirm that construction and/or alteration work is being done according to approved plans and in accordance with the provisions of adopted codes and city ordinances; and does related work as required.
The salary range
$70,972-$95,245 with starting pay up to midpoint with commensurate experience and qualifications.

- Inspects all new residential construction, identifies and investigates unlawful building and zoning activities as well as safety regulations and initiates corrective actions as authorized by City ordinance.
- Performs life safety inspections on places of assembly, businesses, nursing homes, schools, churches, condominiums and apartments.
- Calculates the loading of footing capacity while in the field to determine structural adequacy.
- Evaluates engineering documents and reviews for compliance and installation standards to determine that products are installed per the designer and installation instructions including: appliances, equipment, structural components, and soils
- Enforces building and zoning ordinances from initial application through project completion, maintaining appropriate files and records throughout the process.
High School diploma or GED and some experience in the building trades or inspection and enforcement work; or any combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Knowledge of: The characteristics, qualities, and properties of residential building construction materials and methods.
Ability to: Read and understand plans and specifications and make detailed residential field inspections; interpret applicable codes with accuracy; communicate effectively with others both orally and in writing, including technical reports; work with a minimum of direction, taking the initiative to keep important work progressing to completion within prescribed time limits; resourcefulness; deal with others in a tactful, courteous manner; evaluate situations, identify problems, and arrive at logical decisions; and seek out avenues for providing professional development.
REQUIRED SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS: Certification as a Residential Electrical Inspector by the International Code Council (ICC) or International Association of Electrical Inspectors (IAEI) within one year from date of hire and certification as a Residential Building Inspector by the International Code Council (ICC) within one year from date of hire.
In addition, possession of ICC Certification as a Residential Combination Inspector or equivalent certification from a recognized agency is highly desirable.
Shall be able to obtain and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s license issued by the State of Iowa.
WORKING CONDITIONS:- Works in both a typical office and construction field environment.
- Is periodically called during off-hours to respond to citizen and construction related inquires.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:- Periodically lifts heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds and carries for short distances.
- Climbs and walks over uneven terrain.
- Required to work in adverse weather conditions for a period of time.

- Must be able to speak clearly at normal rate of conversation
- Must be able to kneel, squat, and walk
