POSITION SUMMARY
The essential function of the entry level position within the organization is to conduct inspections of facilities located in the City of Americus for compliance with applicable codes and ordinances. The position is responsible for conducting inspections of new and existing buildings; issuing and following up on non-compliance notices; creating, enforcing permit regulations; initiating legal action related to fire code violation; evaluating fire protection plans and practices; analyzing fire protection systems and equipment, construction and fire protection elements of proposed sites; and performing related clerical functions. The position works independently, reporting major activities through periodic meetings. The Fire Inspector reports directly to the Fire Marshal or designee.MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. The duties listed below are intended only as illustration of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position. Conducts inspections of new and existing buildings in the City of Americus, which include, but are not limited to large assembly buildings and industrial sites, including shopping centers and small strip malls, to ensure compliance with applicable fire codes and ordinances. Prepares in-depth documentation of inspections, including written and photographic materials; performs research relating to inspections as needed. Issues notices of non-compliance as warranted, providing guidance for correction, and conducts follow-up inspections to ensure implementation of corrective measures. 
  • Enforces permit regulations, given a report of a violation and appropriate regulations to ensure adherence of revocation decisions with the policies of the agency represented and applicable codes and standards.
  • Initiates legal action related to fire code violations; compiles case information and appears in court as directed.
  • Evaluates fire protection plans and practices, and analyzes fire protection systems and equipment, construction and fire protection elements and proposed sites, given a site plan and fire flow test results.
  • Performs administrative/clerical tasks, preparing special reports for the area of responsibility, or performing data entry.
  • Attends staff and other professional meetings to exchange information; attends technical or professional classes, workshops, seminars or conferences to improve technical or professional skills or to maintain certification.
  • Interprets various laws, codes, ordinances and regulations in enforcing safety regulations and fire prevention codes in accordance with national, state and county standards.
  • Advises and instructs owners and occupants of buildings in fire prevention methods in the removal of fire hazards and makes recommendations for reducing potential hazards.
  • Reports violations of fire safety regulations and establishes safety standards to appropriate owners and occupants and prepares written notices for follow-up.
  • Receives, responds to and investigates common complaints regarding fire code violation; provides direction to comply accordingly.
  • Maintains current knowledge of trends and developments in the field for application to functional areas of responsibility.
  • May respond to emergency scenes to perform some duties using the Incident Command System, according to the inspector’s level of training or certification(s).
  • Maintains attendance and punctuality within customary tolerances for this position.
Other duties may be assigned.Education and Experience
High School Diploma or GED required minimum.Certificates, Licenses and Registrations
State of Georgia Certified Fire Inspector or the ability to obtain Georgia Standards and Training Certification within 12 months of hire date is required.
