Job Description
Under general supervision, this position is responsible for providing 24-hour emergency communications services.
This entails receiving and evaluating incoming emergency and administrative phone calls for emergency services including but not limited to police, fire, animal control and emergency medical services (EMS), triaging and dispatching those requests for service to the appropriate responders.
The specialists monitor the safety of citizens and responders, making outgoing calls and notifications as necessary and collecting the disseminating necessary information.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Must be able to obtain and maintain the following licenses and certifications within a given time frame:
  • TCIC/NCIC Full Access
  • TLETS training
  • Priority Dispatch, Fire, Medical and Law Enforcement protocols
  • Basic TCOLE Telecommunicators Licensing exam.
  • Must pass a background investigation that includes fingerprinting.
  • Must be able to communicate orally in a clear manner.
Licenses/Certification
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Previous experience providing 24-hour emergency communications services is preferred.
  • Must have good typing skills, 35 wpm is required.
  • Experience in a public safety dispatching environment is preferred.
  • Experience in various aspects of law enforcement, animal control, fire or EMS or post high school education in a related field can partially replace years of experience in public safety dispatch as can experience in a position that requires a high level of multitasking or requires high volume communication by phone or 2-way radio.
  • Preference will be given to those with experience in a consolidated communications center.
The City may consider all related education and/or experience in determining an applicant’s minimum qualifications and starting salary.

Physical Demands
Required to sit or stand at a computer workstation for extended periods of time while wearing a headset.
Must have uncorrected vision of at least 20/200, correctable to 20/20 in both eyes (eyesight between 20/100 and 20/200 must have a letter from their doctor stating eyesight is in static condition). Must have normal hearing or corrected to normal hearing in both ears.
