HIRING RATE: $23.96 Hourly
FULL SALARY RANGE: $23.96 - $29.35 Hourly

Using knowledge and skills attained through Master's level education, this position provides library reference and readers' advisory service to the public. Position may also be involved in the provision of programs, developing library collections, creating promotional displays and publicity, and maintaining information on library activities. This position reports to and takes direction from the Adult Services Manager, the Assistant Library Director, and the Library Director. This position will provide administrative support and will interface with other City employees and the public. This position does not provide direction to other employees.

The information listed below is intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this position. They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills required of this position.

  • Serves library patrons by searching the library catalog and print and online resources to locate information; offers recommendations based on reading and interest levels; provides information from electronic databases and Internet sources; assists patrons with the use of the catalog, Internet, digital materials, and other computer-based resources; and provides referrals to other resources as needed.
  • Develops and implements adult programs: plans activities, determines required supplies, calculates costs, tracks attendance, and evaluates outcomes.
  • Participates in promotional activities to educate active and potential patrons about library services and programs. May include design and production of brochures, flyers, printed and online calendars, electronic newsletters, library web pages and social media content.
  • Develops assigned collections by selecting, ordering and maintaining reference, adult materials, withdrawing outdated materials, and preparing reports and statistics.
  • Provides administrative support by ensuring operational functions are completed, overseeing the use of library facilities, preparing and keeping statistics.
  • Encourages reading and literacy through the development and maintenance of displays and reading lists.
  • Furthers professional knowledge through participation in workshops and professional meetings.
Education & Experience
 Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
  • Master’s degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited university or higher with no prior relevant work experience
Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.
 
Certification and Other Requirements
Valid Class C Drivers License.
 
Work Schedule
This part-time position works in the Library Department and requires flexibility in scheduling as the selected individual will be scheduled to work 20 hours per week, with 1-2 weekend shifts per month as well as 1-2 evening shifts per week.

Advanced - Ability to read literature, books, reviews, scientific or technical journals, abstracts, financial reports, and/or legal documents. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in at the college level or above. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
 
Math
Intermediate - Ability to deal with system of real numbers; practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions and measurement. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in high school up to college. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
 
Writing
Advanced - Ability to write editorials, journals, speeches, manuals, or critiques. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in at the college level or above. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
 
Managerial
Receives general direction: The employee normally performs the job by following established standard operating procedures and/or policies. The employee may choose the appropriate procedure or policy. Performance is reviewed periodically.
