HIRING RANGE: $1,577.34 - $1,932.30 Biweekly
FULL SALARY RANGE: $1,577.34 - $2,287.26 Biweekly

This position aims to investigate, address, and enforce City ordinances and protect the health and safety of the City’s citizens. This is accomplished by conducting physical inspections, responding to complaints of code violations, and facilitating and investigating illegal dumping and tampering of water services. Other duties may include assisting the general public, providing administrative support, and interacting with other city employees and citizens. This position does not provide direction to other employees.

This position can also be filled as a Code Compliance Officer or a Sr. Code Compliance Officer.

This information is intended to be descriptive of the key responsibilities of the position. The following examples do not identify all duties performed by any single incumbent. 

  • Enforces City codes and ordinances for sign, zoning, property maintenance, and swimming pools by conducting inspections, investigating violations, taking photographs, removing illegal signs, conducting a variety of tests of swimming pools, issuing notices and citations and conducting follow-up investigations.
  • Responds to complaints about code violations by notifying and informing establishments of violations to City ordinances, conducting inspections, issuing citations and ensuring establishments meet Federal and State codes.
  • Investigates violations of illegal dumping and tampering of water services by investigating illegal water connections and reports of illegal dumping, photographing violations, gathering evidence for court cases, issuing citations, testifying in court and coordinating the removal and disposal of illegal and/or hazardous material and debris.
  • Assists the general public by answering the telephone, responding to inquiries and providing information on departmental and City policies and procedures.
  • Provides various form of administrative service by writing notices and citations, generating reports, maintaining files and records, preparing memos and correspondence, inputting case information into a database, researching legal information and reviewing incoming mail.

Education & Experience

 Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
  • High School diploma or equivalent plus one (1) year of relevant customer service experience
Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Certification and Other Requirements

Valid Texas Class C Drivers License; Ability to obtain registration as a Registered Code Enforcement Officer with the Texas Department of Licensing and Registration within twelve (12) months of employment

Reading

Intermediate - Ability to read papers, periodicals, journals, manuals, dictionaries, thesauruses, and encyclopedias. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in high school up to college. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.

Math

Intermediate - Ability to deal with system of real numbers; practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions and measurement. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in high school up to college. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.

Writing

Intermediate - Ability to write reports, prepare business letters, expositions, and summaries with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in high school up to college. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.

Managerial

Receives immediate direction. The employee normally performs the duty assignment after receiving detailed instructions as to methods, procedures, and desired end results with little room for deviation. Close and constant review is given.

Supervisory / Organizational Control

No responsibility for the direction or supervision of others.

Complexity

Work involves choices of action within limits set by standard practices and procedures.

Interpersonal / Human Relations Skills

Persuasion Very Frequent: More than 51% of work time.
