What you'll do:

The Life Safety Manager is responsible for inspection, testing, and maintenance of DEN’s critical life safety systems. This includes fire alarm and suppression systems (including fire pumps, valves, piping, and sprinkler heads), dedicated smoke control equipment, emergency communication system (ECS) public address, emergency backup power, uninterruptable power supply systems, invertors, emergency lighting systems, CCTV, and access control systems. The Life Safety Manager must maintain continuous readiness through compliance with regulations from a number of regulatory agencies such as the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), International Building Code, and the Denver Fire Department. The scope of influence for this candidate will include the significant new construction and major renovations included in the Concourse Expansion Program, Great Hall renovation, as well as DEN’s capital improvement plan and O&M projects. The Life Safety Section is comprised of a dynamic and diverse work group operating in a high tempo environment.

Additionally, as a Life Safety Manager, you can expect to:

  • Determine priorities, goals, and objectives for the assigned work functions; oversee development and establishment of policy for maintenance and operation of the airport’s life safety systems
  • Manage the activities of trades workers within the section, including mechanical, electrical, and life safety, in support of efficient operations and maintenance of city owned facilities.
  • Track and monitor maintenance trends. Identify patterns and initiate corrective actions; utilize benchmarking, and revise procedure to improve effectiveness and eliminate deficiencies; prepares and presents data to management team.
  • Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with other Department of Aviation divisions, city agencies, contractors, city, and state agencies and apply procedures and solutions that support the airport’s life safety systems.
  • Ensure licensing and certifications of the Life Safety section are current as required by local, state, and federal code mandates.
  • Manage fiscal oversight responsibilities for assigned operational areas and associated programs and projects.
  • Analyze and interpret Federal, State and Local regulations will be crucial; implement and interpret policies and procedures developed by higher level managers
  • Coach, mentor, and challenge staff. Champion continuous improvement, including devising new strategies and new opportunities. Lead staff development initiatives that include training, development, and succession planning.
  • Develop goals, document performance, provide performance feedback and formally evaluate the work of assigned employees; provide reward and recognition for proper and efficient performance. Assist staff to achieve performance standards and identify opportunities for continual improvement to performance standards.
  • Participate in the DEN Snow Removal Program
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

About You

  • Education & Experience Equivalency Requirement: One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post high school education.
  • Experience requirement: Three (3) years of supervisory experience in facility construction, maintenance, or trades.
  • License/Certifications: By position, requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application.
  • Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.

Ideal Candidate:

  • A minimum of 5 years of Life Safety Management experience, with at least 3 to 5 years of experience working in a Category X airport environment.
  • City of Denver Fire Pro A Supervisors Certification
  • State of Colorado Fire Protection Systems Contractor’s License
  • Fire Pump Installer License, Fire Alarm Systems License, and a Denver Fire Protection Systems Installer License.
  • State of Colorado Fire Suppression Systems/Backflow License
  • Denver Sprinkler Fitter Installer License
  • Fire Alarm System Installer and Denver Access Control Access Control Pro A
  • NICET Accreditation in Life Safety Systems
  • Knowledge of National Building and Fire Codes
  • An understanding of fire protection maintenance principles
  • Advanced user of MS Office 365 Suite (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access, etc.)
  • Excellent organizational, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Strong analytical and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work well independently and to interact with other industry professionals, associated trades, and industry authorities
  • Goal orientated, fosters teamwork, and enjoys working on a team

FBI Background Check: FBI criminal background check is required for all positions at Denver International Airport (DEN). Employees are also required to report any felony convictions and/or moving violations to maintain this clearance and be eligible for continued employment. By position, a pre-employment physical/drug test may be required.

Snow/Emergency Duties: Denver International Airport is a 24/7/365 team operation. If weather conditions warrant or an emergency crisis occurs, all DEN employees are required to work extended hours and/or shifts.
