OUR INTERNS

Citrus County greatly benefits from the services provided by skilled and motivated interns. This position is unpaid, part-time, and is classified as a volunteer positionCitrus County interns (volunteers) are uncompensated individuals who perform services directly related to the business of Citrus County, to support public service activities. It also helps gain experience in specific endeavors. To qualify as a Citrus County intern, an individual must be willing to provide service according to the procedures of the specific area chosen.

You will be introduced to various County procedures and will gain valuable knowledge, skills, and abilities that will help you become a productive contributor throughout your chosen profession. Our goal is to demonstrate the rewards of a career in the public sector.

ANIMAL SERVICES DIVISION:
Ensures the welfare of animals in our care, promoting responsible pet ownership, adoptions, and community involvement. The division works to reduce pet overpopulation, reunite lost pets, provide veterinary support, and investigate cruelty cases, all while safeguarding community health and safety. 
The intern for the Foster program will have the opportunity to:
  • Communicate with and schedule foster parents via phone and in person.
  • Educate foster parents and the public. 
  • Create kitten foster supply kits.
  • Assist with marketing fosters and foster program. 
For the intern working to enhance their skills in the art of Photography will have to opportunity to:
  • Take, edit, and post photos of pets in care at the shelter.
  • Photograph adopters with their new family member.
  • Photograph various activities for marketing purposes.
The intern for Veterinary Services will be given the hands-on practical learning:
  • Animal handling
  • Venipuncture and catheter placement 
  • Surgical prep and anesthesia monitoring 
  • Calculating drugs 
  • Communication with the public/owners 
BUILDING DIVISION:
The mission of the Building Division is to provide the highest level of customer service for the citizens of Citrus County, while administering and enforcing all building and related codes, in order to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public. 
The intern will be introduced to a variety of practices:
  • Pull and copy Flood Elevation Certificates for review for the FEMA CRS audit.
  • Pull, close, and scan project files.
  • Organize, file, and scan all paper flood elevation certificates.
  • Train on how to use GIS parcel maps and flood maps and understand the map designations and flood zones.
  • Train to understand Citrus County’s participation in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and its importance to Citrus County citizens.
  • Learn to read and identify the purpose of Flood Elevation Surveys and Flood Elevation Certificates.
  • Learn how the Florida Building Code and FEMA and the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) all interface with one another and are critical in the construction process.
  • Train on the permitting software INFOR and be able to view, understand and check the status of permits, permit functions, and inspections.
CODE COMPLIANCE DIVISION:
Responsible for ensuring compliance with County Ordinances and the Land Development Code. Help people understand the property laws and codes, and why it is best for everyone in the county if people do their best to meet these requirements. We all need to do our part to keep Citrus County a great place to live and work. 
The intern will have the opportunity to work with the Legal Secretary on a variety of task to include:
  • Preparing pre-hearing orders. 
  • Reviewing legal notices, verifying proper legal information.
  • Reviewing documentation prior to cases going to the Pre-CCH.
COMMUNICATIONS SERVICES DIVISION:
Functions as the Public Information Office (PIO) and provides information about the County to the public and interested parties through news releases, publications about County services, and through the media. The PIO works closely with staff, employee personnel, and the news media to present accurate information to the citizens of Citrus County.The intern will have the opportunity to work alongside the Digital Media Coordinator. Tasks will include:
  • Content Creation for Social Media.
  • Assist managing and maintaining the public website and employee intranet.
  • Optimize Citizen Engagement-research, prepare, and provide answers to social media questions in the voice of the County.
GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS (GIS) DIVISION:
Develops and maintains geospatial data and electronic and printed maps for many County departments and functions. The departments we serve most frequently include Growth Management, Public Works, and Emergency Management, ensuring that the County’s basemaps for land development, utility services, and emergency response are up to date and reflect all new development within the County. 
The intern will have the opportunity to learn a variety of GIS functions which involve:
  • Reviewing, editing, and maintaining geospatial data, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Developing printed maps and online web maps for internal and public use.
  • Analyzing geospatial data for specific projects, such as grant proposals, land development applications, and managed growth.
TRANSIT SERVICES DIVISION:
Dedicated to upholding a standard of excellence that caters to the needs of our diverse community by providing safe, secure, clean, and reliable transportation services. 
The intern will have the opportunity to various clerical and accounting tasks, and build valuable customer service skills:
  • Maintain financial records, which may include invoices, accounts payable and receivable, and journal vouchers (Microsoft Excel).
  • Perform daily banking tasks, including preparing, submitting, and tracking daily deposits.
  • Answers phone lines, schedules trip reservations and assists customers with transportation resources.
  • Data Entry into the Transportation Dispatch / Reservation software system.
  • Performs routine office tasks, which may include ordering office and operational supplies, printing and mailing of brochures, typing correspondence, filing, and other general office duties.
 Intern Qualifications:All interns must meet minimum qualifications for placement into any County related assignment. The primary qualification for intern placement is the ability and suitability to perform a task on behalf of the County. 
  • Minimum age of a Citrus County Intern Volunteer is 18 years of age.
  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or vocational program or a recent high school graduate.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Able to interact with individuals at many levels and handle confidential matters.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Eagerness and motivation to learn and develop new skills.
  • Strong computer skills (MS Office, etc.).
