Job Description:

The Building and Grounds Pesticide Applicator performs and works in several environments (inside / outside) campus infrastructures and property. The Pesticide Applicator will be responsible for the professional completion of work assigned to maintain interior and exterior environments for all pests: insects and animals. As the Certified Pesticide Applicator, you will be required to regulate pesticides to control pests in various settings, such as fields, buildings, grassy knolls, trees, and bodies of water. 

Distinguishing Characteristics:

Position requires recommendation of the installation of irrigation systems across COTA’s campus where needed. Design or modify irrigation system to enhance COTA’s campus. Install irrigation systems with leading industry components and materials for current and future growth of COTA’s campus.

This is a Full-Time on Campus position, Monday through Friday with weekends as needed.

Requirements

Requirements & Essential Functions:

  • Use specialized equipment like UTV-type spray machines and follow strict guidelines for application rates and safety. 
  • Identify and treat invasive weeds, manage unwanted vegetation, and train new technicians.
  • Identify and treat pests and diseases that affect grasses, trees, and ornamental plants.
  • Execute basic IMP principles.
  • Mix or apply pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, or insecticides through sprays, dusts, vapors, soil incorporation, or chemical application on trees, shrubs, lawns, or crops.
  • Provides a record of chemical spraying by keeping daily logs of areas sprayed, amount and type of chemicals used, substances sprayed and reason, and the wind speed and direction at time of spraying.
  • Applies chemicals used in groundskeeping (horticulture, turf management, and floriculture) properly and safely by wearing prescribed protective clothing, masks, and/or rubber gloves and boots, following either written or verbal directions for mixing chemical compounds according to specifications, applying the chemicals properly on grounds and landscapes designated for their use, and disposing of residual chemical products as directed or storing and labeling them for future use.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Policies, procedures, and practices, such as, OSHA, and others.
  • Safety guidelines.
  • Tools, equipment, and materials common to the building and grounds environment.

Skill in:

  • The ability to read English language sufficiently to understand written work orders and instructions. 
  • Able to follow directions for the proper mixture, use, and disposal/storage of cleaners, solvents, chemicals, fertilizers, and comparable products used in groundskeeping (landscaping)is required. 
  • Skilled in the proper operation and maintenance of ground maintenance tools, equipment, and machinery is required. 

Ability to:

  • Ability to read architectural and engineered drawings, specifications, and diagrams.
  • Ability to measure and perform mathematical computations.
  • Ability to design, install and maintain complete lawn/landscape irrigation systems.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to operate and use a wide variety of equipment, including hand and power tools. 
  • Ability to work independently and with other district maintenance personnel. 
  • Extensive knowledge in the use of equipment, materials, methods, plantings, practices, and procedures associated with landscaping and irrigation.
  • Work independently.
  • Communicate effectively. 
  • The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School; at least 5 years of experience.
  • Preferred: associate degree from an accredited institution that is above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Licenses, Registrations, Certifications, or Special Requirements:

  • Certified – Texas Department of Agriculture License or similar from other states (obtain within 6 months for Texas)
  • Certified – Texas Herbicide License or similar from other states (obtain within 6 months for Texas)
  • Technical school or course credits in arboriculture, horticultural and/or floriculture are desirable.

Physical Demand & Work Environments:

  • Prolonged standing and/or walking.
  • Lifting and moving moderate weight objects 50 to 100 lbs.
  • Using or carrying equipment.
  • Reach and grasp objects.
  • Stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, lift or crawl.
  • Use of manual dexterity and fine motor skill.
  • Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
  • The work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
