CIRCUIT COURT OF COOK COUNTY, ILLINOISOFFICE OF THE CHIEF JUDGEJOB DESCRIPTION POSITION: MEDIATOR/CONCILIATOR COUNSELOR FAMILY MEDIATION SERVICES (FMS) DOMESTIC RELATIONS DIVISIONGRADE: 19SALARY: ENTRY RATE: $78,646UNION: AFSCME LOCAL 3969LOCATION: AS ASSIGNEDJOB SUMMARY AND DUTIES Mediators are employed by the Office of the Chief Judge and report to the Mediation Supervisor, Family Mediation Services. Family Mediation Services serves the court by performing mediation in matters concerning children involved in legal proceedings, referred to the program by judges of the Circuit Court of Cook County. Job duties include, but are not limited to:Conducting court-ordered mediation of allocation of parental responsibilities and parenting timeScreening for impediments to mediation, with parties individually, in-person, confidentially, and prior to the first joint mediation conferenceExplaining to all parties the parameters of the mediation process, including what their role as mediator includes and does not include, and the limits to confidentialityProviding emergency intervention in cases of a crisis nature, which includes providing information and recommendations to the judges of the Domestic Relations DivisionCompleting all case paperwork as directed, and in a timely mannerTeaching mandated parent education classes to parents in the court systemServing as Resource Person, including taking calls from, and providing assistance to, judges, lawyers, other mediators, and the publicAttending all meetings called by the Director or Supervisors, including, but not limited to, staff meetings, supervision meetings, and in-house continuing education presentations and discussionsServing on work-related committees as a volunteer, or as directed by the Director or SupervisorsWorking on tasks that promote service to the clientsAbiding by all policies and procedures set forth by the Circuit Court of Cook County, the Office of the Chief Judge, the Domestic Relations Division, and Family Mediation Services as set forth by the Director and the SupervisorsFollowing all rules and regulations of the office as directed by the Director and the SupervisorsMeeting annual training requirementsComplying with any other directives given by the Director and/or the Supervisors, including those connected with the efficient and effective running of Family Mediation ServicesSuch other and additional duties as may be assigned by the Mediator Supervisor or DirectorThe duties listed are not set forth for the purpose of limiting the assignment of work. They are not to be construed as a complete list of the duties to be performed under the job title or those to be performed temporarily outside and employee’s normal line of work.JOB REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:Education: Master’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, or related field, or a Juris Doctorate degree from an ABA-accredited law schoolExperience: At least five (5) years post-degree experience in mental health, mediation, or a related field. Training: Successful completion of a forty (40) hour approved mediation training course which shall cover conflict resolution, and mediation process and techniquesOther: Excellent communication and organizational skills Excellent interpersonal skills Computer literacy Ability to work and get along well with othersWORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS 
  • On a continuous basis, sit at a desk for long periods of time in front of a computer screen
  • Intermittently twist to reach equipment or supplies surrounding desk
  • Perform simple grasping and fine manipulation
  • Strength to lift files weighing up to 20 pounds
  • Use telephone and computer keyboard on a daily basis
  • Walk short distances
