Equine and Small Animal Care Taker Job Description

An equine and small animal care taker is one of the most important jobs at New Day Ranch. There are also many tasks within this job. The main goal is to care for the animals at New Day Ranch. That can be done by feeding, watering, checking for wounds, and cleaning these animals. There will also be the expectation of caring for where the animals stay as well. The animals will need their stalls cleaned, water troughs, cleaned, and the barn taken care of. This is a labor intense job but it also offers a lot of rewards in the aspect of growing relationships with peers, animals, and learning knowledge about animals you may not have experienced before. This job is held at New Day Ranch and is supervised by Maggie Kinney-Bulmer or Beth Long. Maggie Kinney-Bulmer will be signing off and checking hours throughout the week.

Essential Job Functions

* A equine and small animal care taker will be heavily trained before working with the animals. This training will include time with a horse, such as leading, grooming, and getting comfortable around them. This training will also include specific ways to measure equine grains and different food for the animals, as well as cleaning stalls and water troughs.

* This job requires working with many different ranges of animals and people. Not only do we work with horses but also our small animals like alpacas, goats, and mini horses.

* You will be trained on site how to work with the animals as well as how to check for wounds, how to

treat wounds, and how to care for equine of all ages.

Education and Experience

* We do not require any horse experience to have this job title.

* We do require a background check, and volunteer application to be filled out through New Day Ranch as well as an in-person interview with New Day Ranch staff members.

Compensation and Benefits

This job title is created by the Federal Work Study Program and you must qualify through your school for it.

* Based on your financial aid need and agreement your pay will differ.

Working Conditions

Hours of work

The hours of work per week would depend on the Federal Work Study Program.

The hours per day for this title would also differ depending on the care that needs to be done for the animals and the barn. A few hours a day is what to normally expect.

Work environment

The physical work environment is half inside a barn and half outside. Their job is labor intensive and happens rain or shine.

Special conditions or requirements

Be sure to dress appropriately based on the weather. There are many hot days as well as many cold days. Be sure to also to wear close toed shoes like boots. DO NOT WEAR STEEL TOED BOOTS. Steel toed boots can cause major injury to your foot if a horse steps on your foot.

Workplace Policies and Agreements

* There will be policies and expectations when being trained.

* There is a gate with a code to get onto the property at New Day Ranch. The code will be given to you and you will not be permitted to give this code out to anyone else.

* It is important to come to New Day only on your scheduled times. New Day Ranch staff have a schedule of what horse handlers need to be on property and when since we do have many closed groups that only specific staff and volunteers can be at.

Evaluation and Review

* There will be reviews done by Maggie and Beth as the weeks go on with participation and engagement.

* Being on time and attendance is a key factor in working for New Day Ranch and will be discussed if not on time with the Federal Work study Coordinator.

Qualifications:

* Must have completed FAFSA for the current school year

* Must meet and continue to meet Satisfactory Academic Progress

* Must be a United States citizen or eligible non-citizen

* Must demonstrate financial need

Details:

* Hours: Prefer Monday through Friday 7 am 11 am or 1 pm 4 pm. But can work flexible hours between 7 am 6 pm. This position will not work more than 20 hours per week.

* Hourly Pay: $14 per hour
