Expected Starting Salary Range: 31.43 - 39.59 (GC I) 34.50 - 43.54 (GC II) 37.80 - 47.89 (GC III)
SUBFUNCTION DEFINITION: Genetic counseling is the process of advising individuals and families affected by or at risk of genetic disorders to help them understand and adapt to the medical, psychological and familial implications of genetic contributions to disease.

Perform basic genetic counseling. Attends divisional meetings and provides educational outreach at community events.

REPRESENTATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Client Care
Act as the liaison for clients. Obtain and/or evaluate the medical histories of a client to determine the risk for genetic or medical conditions and diseases. Discuss with a client the features, natural history, means of diagnosis, genetic and environmental factors, and management of risk for genetic or medical conditions and diseases. Identify and/or coordinate genetic laboratory tests and other diagnostic studies as appropriate for genetic assessment. Integrate the results of genetic laboratory tests and other diagnostic tests with individual and family medical histories. Explain to a client the clinical implications of the results of genetic laboratory tests and other diagnostic tests. Evaluate the response of a client to one or more genetic conditions or the risk of reoccurrence and provide counseling and guidance. Identify and/or use community resources that provide medical, educational, financial, and psychosocial support and advocacy. Provide medical, genetic, and counseling information to clients.
  • Core skills
Provide basic genetic counseling services in the conduct of healthcare. Assist faculty and other health care professionals in implementation of genetics services.
  • Research
The genetic counselor will demonstrate familiarity with current literature and ability to critically evaluate information.
  • Education
The genetic counselor will provide supervision under the direction of a supervisor mentor for students at the University level, residents, and fellows. Attend divisional or organizational meetings which may include journal clubs, case conferences, or other meetings.
  • Service
The genetic counselor will provide community outreach by assembling and providing educational materials to individuals or organizations in the community.
Qualifications:

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

For Genetic Counselor I:
Masters degree in related field. May require clinical license, certification or training
No directly related experience
Ohio Genetic Counseling License; Certified/eligible for certification by the ABMG or ABGC

For Genetic Counselor II:
Masters degree in related field. May require clinical license, certification or training
2 years of work experience in a related job discipline
Ohio Genetic Counseling Licenses; Certification through the ABGC

For Genetic Counselor III:
Masters degree in related field. May require clinical license, certification or training
Ohio Genetic Counseling Licenses; Certification through the ABGC
5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.
