Christ House is Hiring an Unit Clerk Near Washington, DC

At Christ House, the medically vulnerable men experiencing homelessness who come to us are not just our clients. When they are in our care, they are our neighbors and our community members. We opened our doors in 1985 as the first medical respite facility for sick, homeless patients in the country and are still the only such medical respite program for men experiencing homelessness in Washington, DC. Since that time, we have remained on the cutting edge of conversation around radical hospitality, inclusion, and healing. You will have no typical day here.

In 1992, Christ House opened the Kairos Program, a permanent supportive housing community for former patients with chronic illnesses who decide to make a commitment to their substance use recovery. The program supports up to 45 members and provides ongoing medical care, recovery and spiritual life programs. Kairos program members are an integral part of the Christ House community.

Unit Clerk

Under the supervision of the Nurse Manager, the Unit Clerk is responsible for the coordination of health information for all patients on the respite unit. This includes the transcription and processing of orders on the patient chart, scheduling medical appointments, coordinating patient transportation, and obtaining and managing patient health records.

Essential Functions:

  • Initiates patient records on admission and enters all pertinent information into the patient chart and electronic record.
  • Transcribes and processes orders from providers, nurses, and case management in the patient chart in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Schedules patients for primary care, specialist appointments, and/or procedures.
  • Obtains referrals and/or authorizations for appointments when necessary and facilitates completion of appropriate forms for appointments.
  • Coordinates daily transportation schedule and facilitates communication between patient(s) and driver.
  • Maintains accurate and updated Nursing Care Worksheets.
  • Schedules patient labs as ordered by provider.
  • Answers telephones and communicates messages professionally and timely to patients and staff as needed.
  • Obtains patient authorization for medical record requests.
  • Solicits, files, and scans reports of recent labs, procedures, and office/clinic visits from other healthcare providers.
  • Disassembles patient charts on discharge, ensuring all records are included, accurate, and complete.
  • Maintains a clean and confidential work area and ensures adequate forms and office supplies for Nurses’ Station.
  • Performs other duties as requested.

Job Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Experience working with individuals experiencing homelessness is preferred.
  • Must have strong organizational skills, communication skills, and attention to detail.
