CHLOETA is Hiring a Field Archaeologist I Near Oklahoma, OK

Job Summary

As a Field Archaeologist I at Chloeta, you’ll work on a variety of projects nationwide in support of defense, infrastructure and other governmental clients. You’ll have the opportunity to travel extensively. The duration of each project will vary in length. This opportunity is ideal for candidates with an inquisitive mind. This is a temporary, as-needed position that could lead to full-time employment. Chloeta is seeking specific expertise in the following US regions: Pacific Northwest, Pacific Southwest, Intermountain Region, Northern Region, Southwestern Region, Southern Region, Eastern Region, Rocky Mountain Region.

Job Classification: Part Time

Duty Station: Virtual (Remote), field going.

Compensation:

Chloeta reserves the right to offer any candidate above or below the listed compensation amount based on experience or business needs.

  • $26 to $39.50/ hourly
  • FLSA Exempt
  • This is an on-call, hourly position.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Assists with field projects during all phases of archaeological testing (primarily Class II and Class III) by performing pedestrian reconnaissance, shovel tests, test unit excavation.
  • Document findings through detailed note taking including Munsell soil descriptions and completing field forms.
  • Assists in prehistoric and historic artifact identification and document archaeological deposits.
  • Works as part of a team.
  • Exercises responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct and adhere to Chloeta’s policies and procedures.
  • Conducts archaeological surveys, excavations, and fieldwork in accordance with project requirements, relevant laws, and professional standards.
  • Records and documents archaeological findings, including artifacts, features, and site contexts, using appropriate techniques and methodologies.
  • Ensures proper handling, cataloging, and curation of archaeological artifacts and associated documentation.
  • Collaborates with project team members, including Project Manager, clients and other Subject Matter Experts, as necessary.
  • Assists in the preparation of project reports, including draft and final technical reports, adhering to prescribed formats and guidelines.
  • Maintains accurate field notes, data records, and photographic documentation throughout the duration of the project.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines during fieldwork and laboratory activities.
  • Assists in the coordination of consultations with Indigenous stakeholders and relevant preservation officers, as directed by Project Management

Required Skills and Abilities

  • The archaeologist should have expertise in conducting archaeological fieldwork, including surveying, excavation, and site recording.
  • Proficiency in artifact analysis is essential.
  • Strong documentation skills are crucial. The archaeologist should be meticulous in recording field observations, taking detailed notes, and maintaining accurate records of archaeological contexts, findings, and site data. They should also be proficient in using archaeological recording forms, digital data collection tools, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills are essential for working with diverse stakeholders, including Project Team members, Tribal representatives, and other stakeholders. The archaeologist should be able to communicate clearly and diplomatically, both orally and in writing, and collaborate effectively in a team environment.
  • Familiarity with federal laws and regulations governing archaeological investigations is necessary. The archaeologist should have a thorough understanding of relevant legislation, such as the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), the Archaeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA).
  • Cultural sensitivity and respect for Indigenous perspectives and protocols are critical.
  • The archaeologist should be able to think critically, solve problems, and adapt to changing field conditions and project requirements. They should be able to anticipate challenges, devise effective solutions, and make informed decisions in the field and laboratory.
  • This is an on-call, hourly position.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by Chloeta’s health, safety & drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Extensive travel may be required; length or duration of travel is dependent on project-specific requirements NHPA SME (Subject Matter Expert).

Education and Skills

  • Required: Bachelor's degree in anthropology, archaeology, historic preservation, or related field
  • Required: Archaeological field school
  • Required: Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Required: Self-motivated, physically able to conduct all aspects of fieldwork in all weather conditions, and be able to follow instructions
  • Preferred: Master’s degree

Physical Requirements

  • Requires ability to lift up to 30 pounds to carry all equipment to and from sites from vehicle.
  • Prolonged periods of conducting arduous field work, including shovel tests, in all climatological conditions
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, etc.

Pre-employment Requirements

Due to the nature of Chloeta’s services, this position is contingent upon completing with a satisfactory outcome some or all the following pre-employment background screenings: government security clearance, federal and state criminal background checks, drug test (urinalysis), Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) review, educational history, employment history, and/or credit check. In accordance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), pre-employment background screenings will require the employee’s written authorization and will occur after acceptance of an offer of employment and prior to commencing work. Additionally, employees are required to complete the federal I-9/E-Verify process.

Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy

Employees may be subject to undergoing additional drug screens and/or alcohol testing at any time during the period of employment, including without prior notice.
