Summary 
The Behavior Coach is primarily involved in the behavioral management of children experiencing crisis situations. The Behavior Coach is required to respond quickly and skillfully, in a therapeutic manner, to a variety of crises (both individual and group). The Behavior Coach is expected to facilitate crisis resolution in a manner, which promotes the learning of self-control and reinforces constructive problem solving. In addition, the Behavior Coach will be engaged in crisis prevention, which will involve training, data analysis, primary intervention, assessing volatile situations, and anticipating interventions necessary to defuse the situation.

The Children's Guild is a nonprofit organization serving children, families, and child-serving organizations. We provide individualized transformational experiences to ensure children, families, and communities thrive through education, behavioral health, management, and consulting services. The Children's Guild operates the Monarch Academy public charter and contract schools, Monarch Preschool College Park, The Children's Guild DC Public Charter School, The Children’s Guild Transformation Academy, the TranZed Academy for Working Students, TranZed Apprenticeships, treatment foster care, and outpatient mental health clinics. We are among the most experienced child-serving organizations in the Greater Baltimore/Washington region and are currently expanding in regional and national programs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Review intervention reports for proper completion and assist staff members in completing the form.
  • Participate in case consult and team primacy meetings to address student behavior.
  • Provide and participate in professional development on Wednesdays.
  • Successfully complete the required crisis management program.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities 

  • Ability to assess potential crisis situations involving both individuals and groups and utilize necessary resources to de-escalate and/or defuse these situations.
  • Ability to respond quickly and appropriately to crisis situations using the least restrictive intervention necessary to de-escalate the situation.
  • Relate to children with emotional disabilities and Autism in a sensitive, empathetic, understanding and clinically insightful manner.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and application of behavioral management techniques that are therapeutic for students.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of human behavior and child development, including understanding the factors that contribute to maladaptive behaviors.
  • Ability to relate well to staff members and model professional behavior.
  • Ability to communicate well, both orally and in written reports.
  • Ability to analyze data and assist in the writing of behavior intervention plans.

Competencies 

To perform the job successfully, an individual will retain accountability for the following Key 

Result Areas (KRAs).  

Note: The KRAs are the measurable outcomes tied to the specific responsibilities outlined in the JD. Only designate a responsibility as a KRA if you are consistently measuring it.  

Key Result Area #1: Behavior Management

This KRA is successfully completed when:

  1. Support staff members in implementing behavior intervention plans that are individualized to each student’s need.
  2. Assist with the writing and development of behavior intervention plans.
  3. Assume responsibility for the supervision of management of children during crisis situations.
  4. Assume responsibility for supervision of a group of children when clinically indicated or as assigned to the behavior coach.
  5. Facilitate crisis de-escalation and restorative practices in a manner that promotes learning for both children and staff.

Key Result Area # 2: Professional Development

This KRA is successfully completed when: 

  1. Participate in weekly professional development trainings. Provide the professional development trainings when there are topics of behavior management.
  2. Assist in the orientation of new staff members and the assignment of crisis situations.
  3. Responsible for monitoring staff training needs to ensure proper certification and use of professional crisis management.
  4. Provide professional development and coaching to TAs in the area of behavior intervention plans.
  5. Participate in other trainings and meetings, as assigned.

Key Result Area #3: Documentation and Data Collection

This KRA is successfully completed when:

  1. Document interventions or assist others with the documentation of critical incidents by use of the intervention report. All injuries should be reported to the Principal, risk management, and the nurse on staff.
  2. Oversee documentation requirements, data collection, and analysis of critical incidents through the intervention report process.
  3. Responsible for reporting quality control of therapeutic interventions by including monthly statistics and summations using an online program to document interventions.
  4. Attend team primacy meetings and case consults to discuss the behavior data and interventions for specific students.
  5. Preparation of monthly statistics, as assigned.

Education Qualifications 

A Bachelor’s degree in Psychology or a related mental health field preferred or two (2) years of demonstrated competence working with children with emotional disabilities in crisis situations.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

The Behavior Coach must be certified or eligible for certification in non-violent crisis management.

Remote/Telework Eligibility 

This position is not remote/telework eligible.  

Work Location and Travel Requirements 

The Behavior Coach will report to the assigned Monarch campus as directed by the Monarch principal.
