Medical Director, Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit

Children’s Specialty Group (CSG) at Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters (CHKD) in Norfolk, Virginia is seeking a Full-time, Board-certified Pediatric Critical Care physician with a minimum of five (5) years’ experience working in a pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU). Preference will be given to a candidate with experience serving as Medical Director or in a lead attending role in a CICU.

The pediatric intensive care unit at CHKD, the only free-standing and independent children’s hospital in the Commonwealth of Virginia, consists of 32-beds with an average daily census of 19. Averaging 1200 admissions per year with a nearly 50/50 split medical and surgical patients, we care for the full spectrum of severely ill and injured children in a multi-disciplinary approach. Together with Eastern Virginia Medical School, CSG and CHKD operate that largest pediatric residency training program in Virginia. The residents contribute to our team consisting of dedicated clinical pharmacists, nutritionists, social workers, chaplain, child life specialists, discharge coordinator, respiratory therapists, nurses, nurse practitioners, and physicians. The current critical care coverage model consists of two daytime teams, 8.5 FTE Board-certified/eligible pediatric intensivists and 4 APPS, with 24/7 in-house coverage. The cardiology division currently has subspecialty in cardiac catheterization, electrophysiology, fetal, adult congenital heart disease, advanced imaging and pulmonary hypertension.

CHKD is the only free-standing and independent children’s hospital in the Commonwealth of Virginia. CHKD's cardiac surgery program is part of a regional collaborative between CHKD and the University of Virginia (UVA). To accommodate increased surgical volume, and to prepare for increased surgical complexity, CHKD has committed to establishing a dedicated CICU. The successful candidate will join an established group of surgeons, cardiologists, intensivists and physician extenders with the shared goal of creating a center of excellence.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will be Board-certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine and have at least five (5) years of post-fellowship experience in pediatric cardiac critical care and a proven history in a leadership role with vision and strategic planning experience.
