Children's National Medical Center is Hiring a RN School Health Nurse (DC Public Schools) Near Washington, DC

Description

DC's children need you! We are seeking public health oriented Registered Nurses with a determination and commitment to improving the lives of children in the DC public school system. Our nurses are front line community health advocates for all grade school children in the District of Columbia, every single day of the year.

The school nursing team provides comprehensive school health nursing services to school-age children. We focus on health promotion and disease prevention while also safeguarding their autonomy and personal agency.

As part of a public-private partnership with the District of Columbia's Department of Health (DOH), Children's School Services (through Children's National Hospital oversight) provides on-site nursing services in 120 DC public schools and 90 public charter schools.

Our nurses are responsible for:

  • Community outreach, parent and caregiver education, general nutrition and wellness education
  • Service as a health resource for educators and administrators
  • Emergency health response
  • Immunizations
  • Ongoing expansion of clinical knowledge base
  • Rotating between assigned schools as needed/required
  • Organizing nursing activities for the day, including vision and hearing screening, clinical assessment of health conditions, and referrals
  • Appraising and addressing the needs of the general student population, students with chronic and acute health problems, and special education students with unique or complex needs
  • Performing a variety of selective individual health assessments, initiate referrals on identified health needs, and perform subsequent follow-up

Nurses will receive their final school assignment the first week of employment. Please note that DC School System ward assignments are based on school needs. Locations may be subject to change after an application is submitted. This will be explained in detail during the interview process.

Qualifications

Minimum Education
A.A. Required
BSN Preferred

Graduated from an approved school of nursing. (Required)

3 years of RN or LPN experience in pediatric inpatient, clinic or community health setting

1. Assist students, families, the school staff and community to achieve optimal levels of wellness through appropriately designed and

5. Provide individual and group health teaching and counseling for and with students.
