Overview

The Decedent Affairs Coordinator is a caring, empathetic, compassionate and professional extension of the Spiritual Services department of Children's Mercy Hospital. Our bereaved families are of the utmost importance to us and this role will be intimately engaged with them throughout this process and for years to come. The individual in this position understands grief and is well versed at meeting the needs of our families and partners. He/she possesses great understanding as well as skills in leadership, attention to detail, communication, organization and documentation.

These responsibilities start at end of life and continue during the hours and days until the decedent is released to the medical examiner, donor suite or funeral home. This position will also work with key internal stakeholders to ensure that memory items are offered, facilitated, completed, and delivered to our grieving families. This position will also assist in the coordination of an annual memorial service and will coordinate programs that engage families for years after the death of their loved one.

This is a part-time role, working varied hours including nights and weekends.

Responsibilities
    This individual acts as the process-owner who will work closely with the chaplains to complete the administrative/legal documents that fulfill regulatory requirements for Children's Mercy in the event of a patient death.
  • Coordinate health care team and resources to ensure continuity between end-of-life and postmortem care.
  • This invaluable team member is the liaison for both internal and external parties and agencies, including communication with the organ procurement organization (MTN) and medical examiner or coroner, collaboration with social work and child life and other internal partners, communication by phone and email to internal entities and timely documentation of all death-related activities.
  • Coordinate and respond to End-of-Life events within the hospital.
  • Coordinate Aftercare programming and communication.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Human Services, Human Development, or related field and 3-5 years' experience working with families during the death process. Prefer experience working in hospitals, funeral homes or hospice.
Starting Pay

Our pay ranges are market competitive. The pay range for this job begins at $21.52/hr, but your offer will be determined based on your education and experience.

Remote Work/Work from Home

This position is not eligible work remotely, which means that the person hired will be required to work onsite at one of our Children's Mercy locations and may not work from home. This role will work weekends, evenings and nights.
