A Brief Overview Develops, initiates, educates, and maintains interdisciplinary developmental care in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit. Essential Functions
  • Coordinates comprehensive infant developmental intervention services to newborns, premature and convalescing infants and in collaboration with their families in the clinical setting, with the focus of providing behavioral organization of the infant. • Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates strategies, methods, techniques, positional aids, and/or environmental modifications to provide behavioral and developmental protection of the infant’s balanced functioning for optimal care with family involvement. • Initiates behavioral assessment and implementation of a plan with discussion of the assessment findings with the family. • Identify and interpret the infant’s behavioral strengths, current developmental functional level and thresholds, and sensitivities for handing activities. • Provides and maintains developmental materials supportive of infant’s developmental needs. Provides recommendation for positioning, handling, consistency of care-giving, predictability, timing of interventions, and social interaction. • Establishes contact and maintains on-going communication with the family, providing weekly re-assessment and updates the care plan to create an appropriate environment and pattern of modified developmental care-giving for the infant. • Collaborates with the family to facilitate ongoing developmental care practices at discharge.
  • Provides leadership in the promotion of developmental care with an emphasis on family participation blending individualized developmental care with medical interventions needed, • Serves as an expert, role model, and mentor for the health care team in developmental care practices, recognizing opportunities to effectively utilize change theory in the promotion of developmental care. • Provides developmental education opportunities, materials, and in-services for staff, understanding the need to use adult learning theory. • Collaborates with management and staff to ensure that the culture of the Newborn Intensive Care Unit supports developmental care. • Ensures that unit developmental care practices are based on current developmental care research and are integrated into related unit/hospital policies/procedures. • Participate in daily/weekly interdisciplinary rounding, collaborating with other team members to develop/document a developmental plan of care for Newborn Intensive Care Unit infants.
  • Regular attendance at work is an essential function of the job.

Education Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in occupational therapy, physical therapy, or related field Required
Experience Qualifications
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in a developmental discipline (e.g., Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, etc.) required, preferably in a pediatric environment Required and
  • Previous developmental care experience Preferred and
  • Clinical background in neonatal practice Preferred
Skills and Abilities
  • Must possess leadership, critical thinking, and adult learning skills.
  • Strong communication/interaction skills needed to be respected as a teacher, role model by staff, families, and other disciplines.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Newborn Individualized Developmental Care and Assessment Program (NIDCAP) certification Preferred and
  • Current and valid Nebraska State License in Occupational Therapy or Physical Therapy Required and
  • Current and valid Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association is Required
