Job Overview

Responsible for the operational day-to-day activities of the pharmacy technician staff and for ensuring consistent maintenance of general pharmacy operations throughout the hospital. The supervisor will support the Pharmacy operations leadership team and ensure that the front line technician team members prepare and dispense sterile and non-sterile medication in accordance with the medication order and in adherence to requirements established by CHCO, the state board of pharmacy, federal law and other regulatory agencies where appropriate. Supervises up to fifteen direct reports. This position is a minimum of 60% staffing. Staffing will include coverage of days off and vacations for regular pharmacy technicians and the Pharmacy Purchasing Agent.

Shift: Variable (day/evening), every 4th weekend (and as needed); selected holidays.
Shift Details: 0530-1400, 0600-1430, 1300-2130, 1400-2230 (8, 10, and 12 hour shifts).

Qualifications

Education: High School diploma or equivalentExperience: Five (5) years of pharmacy technician experienceCertification(s):

  • State of Colorado Pharmacy Technician (PHAT) Certification
  • Certificate through a nationally recognized certification board or body approved by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) such as the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or National Healthcare Association (NHA)

CSPT certification preferred.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the functions which the employee may be expected to perform.

  1. Participates in leadership activities for department, contributing to the achievement of goals and objectives; evaluates team performance. Defines and maintains internal processes for section; supports customer service standards and handles operational section. Serves as a champion of organization culture, influencing culture change to support section objectives.
  2. Facilitates the development, maintenance, and implementation of hospital and department operational policies and procedures related to regulatory requirements for medication use, preparation, storage, restrictions, and administration.
  3. Supervises day to day activities of operational technician staff. Assigns and reviews work, provides work instruction (OTJ or formal training) and develops team members. Evaluates performance of team members, providing continuous feedback. Manages discipline and performance issues; hires and fires team members. Identifies resource needs and develops recommendations for meeting needs.
  4. Maintains effective working relationships with staff, peers, and senior leadership. Serves as a liaison between pharmacy leadership and pharmacy staff.
  5. Participate in department and hospital wide committees representing the pharmacy where appropriate.
  6. Works on complex projects; performs project management activities. Provides technical expertise on programs, processes, and best practices.
  7. Participates in sustaining and implementing quality and safety initiatives and practices in the department and throughout the hospital. Reports adverse drug events and medication variances using the hospital variance reporting program (QSRS).
  8. Helps to oversee daily adherence to standard operational procedures and policies as required by CHCO, USP Chapters 797, 795 & 800 and Colorado State Board of Pharmacy rules & regulations.
  9. Actively works with the leadership team to maintain technician competencies, understanding and oversight of the fundamental practices and precautions for preparing and dispensing high quality hazardous drugs to prevent harm to patients, minimize exposure to personnel and minimize contamination of the work and patient-care environment.
  10. Performs quality assessments for accuracy and appropriateness of doses, compounded and packaged. This includes sterile and non-sterile products prepared in pharmacy and pharmacy satellites. Escalates any findings to leadership as appropriate.
  11. Oversees and supervises activities of technicians, making sterile and non-sterile preparations and preparing or dispensing doses. Ensures that pharmacy products of the highest quality and accuracy are prepared, dispensed and delivered to the patient or storage area.

  • Maintains knowledge and competency as related to Pharmacy Standard Operating Procedures, Policies and State Board of Pharmacy rules and regulations.

SCOPE & LEVEL

Guidelines: Guidelines are in the form of stated objectives for the section, unit, function, or project. Is normally the first level of full supervision in a classification series. Performs most elements of supervision over 50% of the time. Will perform the work of front line staff as needed.

Complexity: Work assignment is generally unstructured and employee is responsible for assigning and supervising a variety of functions to achieve the objectives of the section, unit, or project. Duties performed involve weighing and evaluating factors requiring judgment, analytical ability, and problem solving.

Decision Making: Employee is responsible for simultaneous coordination and supervision of several functions, programs, or projects in various stages of completion.

Communications: Contacts are of a non-prescribed nature involving the negotiation and resolution of problems and where exceptional degrees of discretion, judgment, and specialized knowledge are required in carrying out the programs and policies of an organization.

Supervision Received:Under managerial direction, the employee has personal accountability for carrying out the work objectives of an organizational unit or section within the scope of established guidelines and the mission of the agency or department. Employee is expected to resolve problems that arise in the normal course of the work. Work may be discussed with higher level supervisors and reviewed for soundness of judgment and feasibility of decisions.

Salary Information

Annual Salary Range (Based on 40 hours worked per week): $52,922.81 to $79,384.22
Hourly Salary Range: $25.44 to $38.17
