Job Overview

Under the direction of a licensed pharmacist and following established policies and procedures, performs a variety of technical procedures to support hospital inpatient or outpatient pharmacy operations.

Additional Information

Department: South Campus Pharmacy
Hours per week: 40, eligible for benefits
Shift: Day/Evening, 0600-2300. Variable 8–10-hour shifts, some 12 hours shifts for call off coverage. This position does require weekends and holiday commitments.

Qualifications

EDUCATION – High School Diploma or Equivalent
EXPERIENCE –One (1) year of pharmacy technician experience
EQUIVALENCY – Completion of pharmacy technician program may substitute for the one (1) year of the experience requirement.
CERTIFICATION(S) -
  • State of Colorado Pharmacy Technician (PHAT) Certification
  • Certificate through a nationally recognized certification board or body approved by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) such as the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or National Healthcare Association (NHA)

POPULATION SPECIFIC CARE

  • Neonate - <30 days
  • Infancy - >30 days to 1yr
  • Toddlers - >1yr to 3yrs
  • Pre-Schoolers - >3yrs to 5yrs
  • School age - >5yrs to 13yrs
  • Adolescent - >13yrs to 18yrs
  • Adult - >18yrs to 65yrs

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the functions which the employee may be expected to perform.

  • Prepares preparing unit-dose nonhazardous and hazardous medications and drug supplies for dispensing as directed by a licensed pharmacist.
  • Follows security/storage requirements of all medications including temperature monitoring.
  • Takes inventory and analyzes patient-care area medication supply; replaces outdated medications; replaces depleted inventory; performs cycle count. Independently performs inspections for medication outdates.
  • Restocks and delivers medications to patient care areas or clinics, as assigned, including automated dispensing machines; assists in resolving discrepancies.
  • Prepares non-parenteral nonhazardous and hazardous medications for dispensing including controlled substances; delivers medications.
  • Prepares parenteral medications for dispensing including controlled substances and may include any specialty area (such as chemotherapy, etc.) competency; maintains all required records for controlled substances.
  • Independently prepares medications for dispensing through pharmacy software while verifying all lot and expiration numbers; Follows the dispense prep/dispense check process in Epic when preparing medications.
  • Learns and applies standard pharmaceutical/medical terms, abbreviations and symbols commonly used in the prescribing and dispensing of medications.
  • Performs arithmetic calculations for usual dosage determinations required in medication and solution preparation.
  • Maintains inventory and supplies in assigned pharmacy area; ensures all inventory has a validate barcode process completed per established guidelines and procedures.
  • Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, quality improvement, environmental and infection control standards, adheres to regulatory requirements and maintains environmental cleanliness of the pharmacy areas in accordance with regulatory and policy requirements.
  • Performs charging and crediting of medication returns.
  • Reports adverse drug events and medication variances using the hospital variance reporting program (QSRS).
  • Maintains daily workflow to meet established priorities and production requirements and completes daily operations tasks utilizing assigned applications and software.
  • Maintains continuing education requirements for required certifications.
  • Assists in the onboarding of pharmacy technicians, pharmacists, pharmacy residents, interns and students.
  • Assists with safety and quality improvement projects for the department.

SCOPE AND LEVEL

Guidelines: Developmental, standard, or intermediate level. Guidelines are generally numerous, well established, and directly applicable to the work assignment. Work assignment and desired results are explained by general oral or written instructions.

Complexity: Falls between the entry and full performance/senior level. Duties assigned are generally repetitive and restricted in scope but may be of substantial intricacy. Employee primarily applies standardized practices.

Decision Making: Decisions or recommendations on non-standardized situations are limited to relating organizational policies to specific cases. Brings non routine issues to supervisor. Problems that are not covered by guidelines or that are without precedent are taken up with the supervisor.

Communications: Contacts with team members, clients or the public where explanatory or interpretive information is exchanged, gathered, or presented and some degree of discretion and judgment are required within the parameters of the job function.

Supervision Received: Under normal supervision, within a standardized work situation, the employee performs duties common to the line of work without close supervision or detailed instruction. Work product is subject to continual review.

Salary Information

Annual Salary Range (Based on 40 hours worked per week): $40,281.66 to $60,422.48
Hourly Salary Range: $19.37 to $29.05
