Education Advocate
Duties and Responsibilites -
Responsible for supporting children and non-offending parent or caregivers in cases where a child has been traumatized by sexual or physical abuse, has witnessed or experienced a violent crime or other trauma.
Must have working knowledge of community resources, a knowledge of child abuse issues & child development and possess the ability to work with an interdisciplinary team.
Establish a trusting relationship with these families by initiating regular client contact, provide emotional support and assist the family in coping with the realities and complexities of recovering from trauma
Connect the child and family with appropriate resources within the community and act as liaison for the child and family identifying housing, education and financial needs
Assist parents in making appointments for doctors and social services agencies
Treats clients effectively without regard to race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, social class, environment, or religion
Discuss with clients and families compensation for victims and how to access funds – assist with filing applications as needed
Distribute client satisfaction surveys
Education Component – maintain certifications for training curriculum as requested
Upon request from school, daycare, church or social club – prepare to present the applicable program for that group (with/without a volunteer)
Follow up after presentation for questions
Assist with day to day operations as requested by ED and provide support to all staff.
Qualifications
Bachelors Degree in Social work/ Psychology/Child Development or other related field.
Supervisory Relationships
Supervised by Executive Director
Skills and Knowledge Required
Possess a working knowledge of community resources including child protective services, the criminal justice system, a knowledge of child abuse and child development and the ability to work with an interdisciplinary team
Prior Experience Preferred
Two years in the field of social services, mental health, criminal justice, clinical evaluation, forensic interviewing or other comparable work with children
Personal Qualities
Ability to work as a team, relate to children of all ages in a positive manner and be able to relate appropriately to families and children who are experiencing emotionally challenging situations. Exhibits commitment, cooperation, excellence, inclusiveness, integrity and respect
